BYU OHS School Counselor

The BYU Online High School (BYU OHS) School Counselor reports directly to and works closely with the BYU High School Online Learning Education Service Agency (ESA) School Counselor. Under the direction of the ESA School Counselor, the BYU OHSSchool Counselor oversees the school's academic advising and counseling, graduation, transcripts and credits, mental health counseling referrals, College and Career Readiness planning, and college application support. The School Counselor supervises student progress, and coordinates student academic planning with teachers and Parents. The School Counselor works with students and school staff to provide access to and help communicate about additional educational resources and other support available through the Division¿s Student Success Center. This is a year-round three-quarter time position in an online school environment. The School Counselor will work an estimated 28 hours or less a week. Hours will vary based on enrollment.

What qualifies you for this role:

Required

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
  • Master's degree in School Counseling, holds a Utah School Counseling License, and has previous experience counseling and advising students in a High School setting.

Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications:

  • Knowledge of USBE high school graduation requirements.
  • Current on state and national standards and research-based educational practices.
  • Excellent ability to speak persuasively to implement desired actions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.
  • Superior caring attitude and approach to working with students, parents, teachers, and leadership.
  • Demonstrated success in effective conflict resolution.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with administration, faculty, staff, high school personnel, students, and parents.
  • Excellent event planning skills (i.e., High School parent student educator conference).
  • Superior knowledge of Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) guidelines, Individual Education Plans (IEPs), 504 Plans.
  • Experience working with students with learning disabilities.
  • Familiarity with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) policies and procedures.
  • Self-starter with an eye for detail and the ability to follow through with assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to supervise, motivate, train, and mentor student employees.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
