Copy Editor

Westchester Magazine, a monthly regional lifestyle publication and part of media company Today Media, is seeking a Copy Editor to join its Rye, NY office. This position reports to the editor. Along with Westchester Magazine, the position is responsible for copy editing our ancillary pubs including 914INC., Westchester Home, Westchester/Hudson Valley Weddings, and Ultimate Guide.

Westchester Magazine covers food and dining, education, real estate, arts and entertainment, beauty and style, personality profiles, and other relevant topics in the county of near 1 million just north of NYC. 914INC., which expanded from a quarterly to a bimonthly in 2021, is dedicated to serving the owners, executives, managers, entrepreneurs, and other professionals who make up our business community. Westchester Home, a quarterly, continues the traditions of Westchester Magazine with smart writing, stunning photography, and beautiful layouts covering interior and outdoor design, gardening, and more. Our annual bridal publication Westchester/Hudson Valley Weddings features homegrown resources, tips, trends, and ideas from the experts. The Ultimate Guide, an annual, targets new residents and visitors, showcasing local dining, arts and entertainment, shopping, education, recreational activities, town highlights, and other interests.

• Serving as COPY EDITOR for WM editorial print content plus ancillaries (24 pubs/annually) — line editing long-form stories for content, voice, consistency, and clarity.
• Reviews and corrects copy for grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and other editorial errors.
• Brainstorm, write, and/or assign approximately 3-4 Westchester Magazine features a year.
• Assigning editor and/or writer for the occasional department (e.g., history, sports, trending) and assisting editors with creating collaborative features throughout the year (e.g., Women in Business, Best Of).
• Oversees Bookread process for all pubs after editorial sign-off date.
• Follow county goings-on in dining, health & beauty, business, recreation, real estate, home, and more to help generate story ideas.
• Contribute to other content areas as needed including general editorial duties.
• Act as ambassador for the brand — representing the magazine at the company’s branded events, as well as in the local community (at events, by participating on panels and roundtables sponsored by other organizations, and by accepting speaking engagements at colleges, institutions, etc.).

Who we are looking for:

The ideal candidate brings a deep knowledge of Westchester and at least two years of experience in copy editing and proofreading, preferably in regional lifestyle categories; experience in AP style. S/he is energetic, loves living in Westchester, and has a strong writing/editorial/journalistic background. S/he is highly collaborative and has an eye for accuracy and a passion for ensuring that every article published meets the highest standards of quality.

Compensation/work location

Salary is 40-48K

Position requires working in our Rye office on a hybrid schedule (1-2 days in the office depending on the week).
