How You Will Contribute

The Coordinator of Internships and College Programs is responsible for engaging a broad and diverse group of college and university students through the development of learning and career opportunities and arts-based programming. Through the museum’s paid Internship Program, students interested in learning about careers in the museum and art fields receive one-on-one mentorship, gain a deeper understanding of a professional work environment, and acquire invaluable knowledge and experience. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, designing and coordinating a paid internship program, a calendar of courses for higher education and pre-professional audiences, and building and sustaining relationships with area universities/colleges, other arts organizations, and other relevant stakeholders.

 

The Coordinator  is a member of the Student & Educator Engagement (SEE) department, within the division of Learning & Engagement As part of this team, they will provide high school and higher education audiences with high quality, creative opportunities to engage with the museum’s collections and make meaningful personal and academic connections, including leading student gallery lessons and professional development workshops In addition to engaging with the SEE team, the Coordinator works with staff across the division and the museum and attends cross-institutional meetings to represent the work and needs of the internship program and programming for university and College audiences.

 

Specifically, you will:

  • Strengthen relationships with area colleges and universities
  • Coordinate the internship program by working collaboratively with PMA staff and area universities/colleges to:
    • Promote the Internship Program and student opportunities
    • Liaise with various museum departments on intern assignments/projects
  • Coordinate internship experience including onboarding, orientation, and program evaluation
  • Program recruitment and advertising, responding to internal and external inquiries
  • Spearhead the application review process and coordinate intern selection
  • Set program goals, track and report program stats and highlights
  • Oversee the program budget, maintain records, prepare reports, and track intern hours
  • Track grant-related spending and provide information for funder reports
  • Take part in cross-institutional planning and brainstorming meetings related to Internships and collaborative programming opportunities
  • Design and coordinate professional development opportunities for interns to gain a better understanding of museums and the arts community
  • Facilitate stewardship among interns post-internship
  • Market to and recruit students and former interns for open positions at the PMA
  • Develop, coordinate and be the lead educator in partnership programs with several Medical schools. These programs, offered to medical students and other medical professionals, range from single 3- hour workshops to several week/ semester credit-bearing courses
  • Develop new relationships and maintain and grow strong relationships with present partners
  • Engage with and lead projects with other education organizations as needed
  • Represent and extend the museum’s work with students and teachers and professionals in the city, region and nationally through meetings, conferences and workshops. 
  • As part of the SEE team:
    • Lead gallery lessons for high school students and engage in in the planning process for the Sherlock program (a middle school program focused on the development of critical and creative thinking, which is based on the Medical school curriculum)
    • Participate in the development and delivery of Teacher Workshops
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

Your background and experience include:

  • Commitment to building inclusive, diverse, equitable, and accessible museums
  • Creative and enthusiastic team player with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and work in collaboration with a wide variety of people
  • Experience in teaching school and College students in a museum and/ or college setting.
  • Understanding of object-based and inquiry- based teaching methodologies
  • Experience mentoring students and peers
  • Strong communication and writing skills, with comfort speaking in front of a group
  • Experience working with a wide variety of diverse students, colleagues, and stakeholders
  • Highly organized and detail oriented
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Computer skills and prior experience with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word
  • Demonstrated skill with database management as well as scheduling
  • Knowledge of program development and administration; budget development and management
  • Fluency in a language(s) other than English is a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree in Art History, cultural studies, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education/experience
  • Familiarity with colleges and universities in the Philadelphia area (a plus)

 

Position and Compensation Details

  • The SALARY for this position is $48,000.
  • This position is FULL-TIME, EXEMPT, and 35 hours per week.
  • This position includes weekend and evening work as needed.
  • This position is part of the AFSCME Local 397 bargaining unit.
  • This position reports to the Associate Director of Student and Educator Engagement
  • Physical requirements:
    • Able to remain stationary for extended periods of time, to utilize computers and other office equipment required of this job, to perform physically administrative duties in a typical interior office environment, gallery, or exhibit space, and to access most public and staff areas of the museum campus
    • Able to lead groups through the museum
    • Able to frequently use multiple technical equipment and applications
    • Periodically move throughout museum departments
    • Frequent use of multiple technical equipment and applications
    • Ability to lead groups throughout the museum’s galleries
    • Ability to move 50 pounds and lift 25 pounds
  • COVID-19 vaccination required.
  • Background check required after a conditional job offer is made. Consideration of the background check will be tailored to the requirements of the job.
  • PA Child Abuse Clearance and FBI Fingerprinting required.
