GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the direction of the Director of Curriculum and Instruction, the Content Specialist position is responsible for assisting in building the capacity of teachers to improve the conditions of teaching and learning. The specialist will have decision-making power to address day-to-day academic and operational school issues and will be responsible for ensuring the district's mission and goals are achieved. Collaboration with multiple departments to ensure consistency of practice and use of resources will be essential as this position works continuously to improve the skills and knowledge base of school administrators.  Under the supervision of the building principal, the employee performs most work independently and performance is evaluated by student academic achievement.  Performs related work as directed.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Job Functions

  • Coaches and supports school administrators and teachers in goal setting, planning, development, implementation, and monitoring of action plans that will guide school leaders in meeting their instructional leadership objectives and for their schools to meet performance targets
  • Coordinates cross-content integrated opportunities for an instructional program that may include reading, writing, math, service learning, and/or instructional technology.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of instructional methods and programs and recommends revisions and improvements as needed.
  • Coordinates curriculum and assessment development, implementation, and revision.
  • Visits classrooms on a regular basis to ensure consistency of what is taught.
  • Indirectly supervises and coaches teachers and may assist school principals in teacher evaluations.
  • Performs formal classroom observations and assists teachers in the improvement of instructional performance.
  • Provides guidance in the selection of textbooks, teaching materials, and equipment for the program.
  • Serves as a resource and advisor to administrators and teachers regarding the schools instructional program.
  • Assists teachers in the improvement of instructional delivery and performance through active coaching, feedback, and job-embedded professional development.  
  • Assists in developing and conducting division-wide staff development for the district instructional staff.
  • Provides feedback on successful leadership practices, such as effective management of instructional staff, use of data, and establishment of school culture.
  • Attends school-based meetings and events to foster a culture of engagement with staff, families, and community.
  • Builds the instructional leadership capacity of principals with particular focus on instruction, data analysis, aligned interventions, community, and culture.
  • Initiates and maintains effective liaisons to maintain a current knowledge of developments and research in the profession.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Must possess extensive experience in the field of public education to include classroom experience and supervisory/administrative experience of instructional programs in public schools.
  • Must possess a comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices, and current issues in the provision of public education programs and services.
  • Must possess a demonstrated knowledge of state/federal regulations and accreditation requirements governing public education program.
  • Must possess excellent leadership, supervisory, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, paraprofessionals, school administrative staff, parents, guardians, the community, and central office administrative staff.
  • Must possess excellent leadership, management, and communication skills.
  • Must possess experience supervising and providing performance feedback to professional staff, managing budgets, and developing and interpreting student population projections and teacher allocation.
  • Demonstrated strong computer skills is required.
  • Must possess the ability to speak effectively before large groups and high-level executives. 
  • Must possess budget planning experience.
  • Must possess a demonstrated ability to support division goals and programs through instructional initiatives within budgetary guidelines. 
  • Must possess skill in preparing documents and composing fiscal letters and memoranda.
  • Must possess skill in working with considerable independence to carry out tasks to completion.
  • Must possess skill in performing duties with a professional and cooperative work ethic; ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Must possess ability to access, operate and maintain various software applications; ability to read, update and maintain various records and files.
  • Must possess ability to work flexible hours necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
  • Must possess considerable knowledge of recent developments, current literature and informational resources in the field of personnel administration. 
  • Must possess expert knowledge of basic school district work policies and guidelines; expert knowledge of departmental practices and procedures.

Education / Certifications / Experience

Must hold a bachelor's degree or higher in Education or a related field, with a licensure endorsement in Education; Must possess an advanced degree in Educational Administration and Supervision and hold or be eligible for an endorsement in Administration and Supervision; Supplemented by eight (8) to ten (10) years progressively responsible instruction/supervisory/management experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public using the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Frequent sitting, walking, standing, bending, grasping, fingering, repetitive motion, and reaching. Occasional stooping and kneeling. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds rarely. Requires timely and regular adherence to established work schedules.
