Location:
Philadelphia, PA
Open Date:
Mar 12, 2024
Description:

The Urban Teaching Residency (UTR) program at Penn Graduate School of Education is an in-service teacher education program that offers students the ability to earn a master’s degree and/or teaching certification while working full-time. UTR is organized around issues of equity, social justice, and anti-racism as well as research-based frameworks of teaching and learning.

UTR seeks an instructor who will create a climate that embraces excellence and diversity, with a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring that enhances the work of the program and attracts and retains a diverse student body. We are seeking an instructor for Contemporary Issues in Urban Education (see the course description below).

Contemporary Issues in Urban Education, (In-Person, Fall 2024): This course explores the origins and context of Urban Education in the United States by critically examining how schools reproduce and sustain systemic inequality. We will examine historical, political, economic, and socio-cultural frameworks for understanding urban schools, students and teachers. Through course readings, class discussions, and assignments we explore the following: (1) the role of students, families, teachers, and communities as actors in Urban Education; (2) the broader sociopolitical urban context of achievement and opportunities in city schools, (3) teaching and learning in Urban settings and (4) our teaching values and vision as actors in Urban Education.

Course goals include:

● Taking an assets-based perspective to see the funds of knowledge students, families, and communities bring to education – and to disrupt deficit perspectives in the process

● Taking a structural view that makes visible how larger societal structures and systems shape schooling – and can be reshaped in more just ways

● To examine culturally responsive and sustaining approaches to teaching and learning – and revisit these in our own teaching during fall asynchronous sessions

Responsibilities:

● Design course syllabus, assignments, lessons, and activities to meet course and program goals

● Create a supportive and inclusive learning environment for students

● Assess student progress and provide timely and constructive feedback

● Collaborate with other instructors and program leadership to ensure a cohesive learning experience

● Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and student performance

● Communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and program leaders

Qualifications:

Qualifications:

● Master's degree (required)

● Previous K-12 teaching experience is required (experience teaching in Urban schools preferred)

● Previous undergraduate or graduate level teaching is required (experience teaching comparable courses is preferred)

● Knowledge of subject matter

● Commitment to UTR’s mission to promote anti-racist and social justice oriented teaching and learning grounded in an asset-based approach to local communities and stakeholders

● Strong communication and interpersonal skills

● Ability to adapt teaching methods to meet the needs of diverse learners
