Job Description
New England Cancer Specialists (NECS) is currently seeking a full-time M-F Compounding Pharmacy Technician in our Scarborough location. Experience in a sterile compounding environment is preferred but not required as we are willing to train the right person. The Pharmacy Technician will work directly with an oncology pharmacist or designated physician on all daily activities. They will prepare all chemotherapeutic and biologic products according to established policies and procedures. They will utilize automated dispensing and inventory technology and perform inventory as directed by the oncology pharmacist. The successful candidate will have a national Pharmacy Technician Certification and at least one years' experience as a Pharmacy Technician.

Responsibilities:
  • Assists the pharmacist in maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations, accrediting body standards, and NECS Policy and Procedures.
  • Follows all appropriate guidelines for the preparation of compound sterile products per NECS Policy and Procedures: Perform physician-controlled agent inventory and restocks the drug preparation area. Logs all chemotherapy waste and expired drugs according to pharmacy procedures. Maintain the practice inventory and orders all pharmaceuticals and supplies under the supervision of the oncology pharmacist.
    • Product preparation -
      • Prepares ambulatory chemotherapy infusions and calibrates the infusion device for drug administration per physician order.
      • Reviews all patients' orders to verify dose and administration instructions, and notifies the oncology pharmacist, physician, or nursing for any questionable orders before preparation.
      • Checking procedures - Responsible for double-checking all doses prepared and dispensed with another oncology technician, physician, nurse, or oncology pharmacist, depending on the practice site.
      • Labeling procedures - Prepares and labels all normal saline and heparin flushes for nursing.
      • Packaging compound product for storage and delivery
  • Verifies all shipping invoices and refills the automated dispensing unit. Notifies the pharmacist of any product issues or shortages.
  • Prepares other dosage forms (e.g. Medicare DME oral agents, ambulatory pumps, supportive care agents, oral dexamethasone patient supplies) for nursing
  • Works with all investigational studies. This includes working with the Research Department for patient randomization, preparing and documenting all investigational drug preparations, and working with the oncology pharmacist on all verification, ordering, and documentation procedures.
  • Obtains continuing education credit as required yearly.
  • Responsible for maintaining a clean working environment in the drug preparation area according to established policies and procedures.

Travel: Travel to our Scarborough location for weekend coverage is required. Periodic travel to our other locations may be needed for coverage and vacation purposes
Weekend: Participation in the weekend urgent care clinic rotation is mandatory, 1 day per month.
Experience and Skills
  • High School diploma or equivalent required; some college is preferred.
  • National Pharmacy Technician certification is required. (PTCB)
  • At least one year of experience (or combination of education and experience) as a Pharmacy Technician.
  • Must have demonstrated IV admixture skills and abilities.
  • Eligible for state registration, certification, or licensure per state regulation.
  • Has strong experience working in an EMR or HER
  • Experience in Chemotherapy and Biotherapy is preferred.
