Job description

Community Planning and Economic Development is a fast-paced work environment dedicated to accountability, consistency, and transparency.


The Community Planning and Economic Development (CPED) Department is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team as a Compliance Coordinator in the Development Services Division, Compliance Unit.
Under the Compliance Unit Supervisor, the Compliance Coordinator coordinates county code compliance using superior customer service and communication skills. The coordinator works with department and other county staff to conduct investigative, technical and administrative work in the enforcement of county codes related to the use of land and property.


Essential job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Works directly with the public to gather all necessary information regarding the nature of the complaint, and to explain related county compliance issues and procedures.
  • Creates, organizes and maintains case files to track and monitor the progress of on-going compliance actions.
  • Conducts site visits or requests assistance from staff to investigate the complaint or to inspect for compliance.
  • Confirms all compliance actions with photos and written documentation.
  • Serves notices upon property owners, by mail or in-person.
  • Testifies or otherwise provides information for administrative conferences, appeals, and court cases as to field findings, evidence gathered, and correspondence generated during an investigation.
  • Refers complaints to other departments or agencies for action and/or to coordinate compliance activities to assure the most effective approach.
  • Logs all complaints or identified violations and enters the information in the department's related database tracking programs.

  • High School Diploma or GED and at least two years of college level course work in Business or Public Administration, Environmental Health, Planning, Architecture, Construction Management or a related area.
  • Two years experience working with the public providing service, including code interpretation, in the areas of land use, building construction, environmental health, or a closely related area. Experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Ability to utilize a personal computer and related software to perform word processing, information retrieval, and tracking.
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License.


  • Demonstrate superior interpersonal and customer service skills, including: sensitivity, de-escalation, and principles of mediation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow directions and quickly adapt to changing conditions and complex circumstances.
  • Ability to analyze problems and act on solutions with a high degree of confidence.
  • Knowledge of building/construction practices and procedures and be able to understand county zoning ordinances and other regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret site plans, construction documents, drawings, and specifications.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
