Job Description
The Community Programs Coordinator is a full-time position that oversees the day to day running of the Community Solutions department’s service programs, supports CS events, and provides backup in all program areas as needed. This person interacts with community members using a judgment-free and harm reduction-based approach with the goal of increasing access to services and keeping pets with their families. This person serves as a leader in the Community Solutions department and takes initiative in serving clients in the most efficient and effective way possible. They engage with citizens to embrace the mission of Asheville Humane Society and work collaboratively with community members to find the best possible solution for each person and their pet(s). This person collaborates with community partner organizations in a professional, courteous, and timely manner.
The Community Programs Coordinator works primarily at Asheville Humane Society’s Outreach Center and will be both indoors and outdoors. This person must be able to complete physically demanding duties such as transportation of animals, building fences, etc. and have the ability to stand and sit for long periods and the manual dexterity to use animal handling and cleaning equipment. Hourly pay starts at $17.00.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manages day to day processes of all "service" programs, including: managing and updating the organizational partnerships that go along with the programs, Vet Assistance Program, Behavior Assistance, Spay/Neuter, AMG/Temp Boarding, Helpline and Pet Retention line support, Spanish Language Resources and Supplies
- Ensures appropriate paperwork and protocols are in place and works with Director of CS to update protocols and processes for service programs as needed
- Collaborates with the Humane Resource Coordinator to coordinate temporary boarding requests, counsel clients, and match with a temporary boarding partner, transportation assistance, etc. as applicable
- Maintains a knowledge of pet-related resources and issues (behavior, medical, handling, etc) as well as human/social service resources and issues (homelessness, immigration, drug addiction, mental health issues, poverty, racial inequalities), and principles for working with people (leadership, Motivational Interviewing, resiliency, etc)
- Data management – reviews CS database and identifies data entry issues on a basis consistent with need (daily, weekly and monthly), as well as running regular reports for grants, government contracts and other administrative purposes.
- Works with the Director of Community Solutions to engage, supervise, and train volunteers
- Handles day-to-day administrative tasks including invoice issues with vet clinics, ordering office supplies, handling computer and phone issues, etc.
- Works with the Director of Community Solutions and Outreach Supervisor to train new staff
- Assists in planning and implementing CS events in collaboration with the outreach team
- Provides daily decision-making support to Helpline and Pet Retention staff
- Attends regular CS team meetings and other trainings
- Interacts with Community Solutions clients respectfully and in a judgment-free manner
- Provides client education on resources available through the Community Solutions department and other local resources
- Maintains a humane and caring attitude at all times toward animals, public, volunteers and staff
- Collaborates with all Community Solutions staff and other AHS staff
- Assists with administrative elements and additional tasks related to the Community Solutions department on an as-needed basis
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED required. Bachelor’s degree or higher education preferred.
- Strong computer skills including use of various databases and Microsoft Office programs
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Strong dog/cat handling skills and a working knowledge of dog/cat behavior and medical issues
- A commitment to serving both people and their pets
- Experience working with diverse and/or underserved communities
- Ability to work independently, balance multiple projects, and meet deadlines; high level of initiative
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, writing, and communication skills.
- Knowledge of statistics, data collection, and data analysis
- Ability to work with volunteers and co-workers in a professional manner.
- At least 2 years of experience managing programs
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) is strongly preferred
The position requires work outside with exposure to extreme temperatures, as well as rain. This position requires standing for long periods. It requires the ability to stoop, bend, reach, and lift items weighing up to 50 pounds to a level of 4 feet high, as well as the ability to handle dogs weighing up to 150 lbs. This position also requires exposure to loud noises. This position has varying working hours depending on scheduling and citizen needs, and/or the possibility of occasional travel.
