Subject to continued funding and staffing priorities, the Civil Practice of the Legal Aid Society is seeking a highly motivated individual with a deep commitment to public interest practice and policy to join the dedicated and growing Community Outreach team who work with the managers, attorneys, paralegals, and support personnel of the Civil Practice to provide trainings, workshops, and educational materials to our community partners and the client communities we serve.
The Community Outreach team develops and distributes digital content and written materials as well as provides trainings and workshops to the greater NYC community with the goal of empowering New Yorkers to confidently interact with the complicated systems they depend on to serve their basic needs. The team works closely with our community partners to stay knowledgeable of emerging trends affecting our clients and provide our partners with the knowledge to support our most vulnerable community members. The Community Outreach Coordinator’s responsibilities include assisting in developing Know Your Right Materials, creating and maintaining a SharePoint page to be accessible Society wide, assist in coordinating trainings and workshops with community partners, as well as oversee and manage clinics around various Civil Practice areas including immigration, housing, government benefits etc. The coordinator will sit at Thomas Street but work out of different offices and locations throughout the five boroughs of NYC and be able, as needed, to staff off site programs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop community education and Know Your Rights materials
- Create and maintain a Community Outreach SharePoint page
- Coordinate requests for trainings from community partners
- Oversee and manage Civil Practice clinics
- Work closely with Pro Bono practice and internal staff to recruit and organize clinic volunteers
- Maintain and develop community partnerships
- Develop skills and comprehensive knowledge of the practice areas of the Society
- Represent the Civil Practice and Legal Aid in the community
- Other duties as assigned
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Excellent written, oral advocacy, and computer skills
- Ability to work in a team setting including strong communication and follow-up skills
- Highly self-motivated and able to work independently
- Experience in and/or commitment to advocacy on behalf of low-income people is strongly desired
- Ability to manage relationships and effectively community with program staff, elected officials, and community groups
- Demonstrated ability to accurately and quickly gather data, compile information, and keep accurate records
- Experience working in a high paced environment
- Excellent organizational skills
- Excellent computer skills including Office 365 and all Microsoft Office programs, especially Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, etc.), and demonstrated ability to work with databases
- Excellent judgement, including ability to handle sensitive or confidential information
SALARY TRANSPARENCY
