Job description

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office is creating a list for full-time and Part-Time Communications Officer/Dispatcher.

The 2021-2023 collective bargaining agreement consists of a four-year step pay increase that tops at $26.35.

We are also accepting later transfers from other agencies that match base Communications Officer/Dispatcher rate with years of full-time experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS : Job takes place in stressful office setting with no known hazardous environmental or physical working conditions. The Dispatcher is expected to work flexible schedule including some overtime when needed.

Under general supervision, the Dispatcher receives telephone calls, dispatches enforcement officers and other emergency response agencies and performs other duties specifically assigned by the Sheriff and/or designee.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES : Dispatch:
*Receive calls and dispatch patrol officers by location and availability to accidents, complaints, incidents and general calls.
*Receive calls and dispatch EMS, fire departments and other emergency response agencies, as necessary.
*Prioritizes calls.
*Maintain contact with officers for updating and safety.
*Record log information.
*Compile and prepare initial complaint report.
*Enter warrants into LEADS/NCIC database systems.
*Conduct LEADS, CCH and arrest record checks.
*Maintain radio and telephone tapes.
*Monitor entrances and security devices.
*Operate equipment including: 9-1-1 computer, LEADS computer, fire and EMS paging systems, radio, and computer aided dispatch (CAD) system.
Cooperate with other law enforcement agencies, as necessary.
Compile information and prepare reports, as needed.

Clerical:
*Record Ohio accident reports.
*Maintain geographic file in computer system
*Maintain accurate emergency contact numbers for business.
*Compile monthly and annual statistical reports.
*Answer the telephone, direct calls and take messages.
Schedule appointments.
Make photocopies.
Perform basic typing assignments.
File documents.
Sort mail.

Miscellaneous:
Attend meetings and serves on temporary committees, as requested.
Determine the need for equipment repair and make appropriate arrangements.
Assist with receptionist duties, as needed.
*Maintain and increase knowledge and skills through attendance at meetings, conferences, training seminars and in-service training sessions.
Perform additional duties and assignments, as required.

  • Radio communications and radio codes

  • Telephone system equipment and operations
  • County geography
  • Correct use of grammar, punctuation and spelling
  • Document preparation, requirements and methods
  • LEADS operation
  • NCIC Programs
  • First aid and CPR
  • Computer software

  • Recognize dangerous and emergency situations and respond appropriately.
