Who We Are Looking For
We are looking to add an exceptional, enthusiastic writer and editor to our team to support our work building a Bicycle Friendly America for everyone. The League is an association of individuals, organizations, and businesses powering the bike movement to improve lives and communities through better bicycling nationwide. Supporting this network of advocates is at the core of the League’s work; we amplify their voices for better bicycling at all levels, and inspire action through storytelling and communications. The ideal candidate will have a keen eye for using communications to strengthen the work to make bicycling a safe, comfortable, and accessible option for all people.
The ideal candidate will have a strong sense for storytelling and can craft clear communications that convey policy ideas in everyday terms. A primary role for the candidate will be liaising with program directors to implement the League's communications strategy led by the communications director. Specific responsibilities will focus on producing a biweekly newsletter, blogging about programs and policies, creating resources for advocates and changemakers, disseminating information via multiple channels, and organizing resources online.
Responsibilities
The Communications Coordinator will support League programs under the direction of the communications director and program staff, including:
● Identifying story opportunities and writing content for the organization's blog, emails, press releases, and magazine
● Creating and posting content, including graphics, to the League’s social media channels; measuring the performance of social media accounts
● Assisting in crafting and publishing the League's magazine
● Assisting in implementing the League's communications strategy
● Posting new content and ensuring current content on the League’s website is up to date
● Supporting the Bicycle Friendly America (BFA) team in creating and updating relevant resources for applicants and local advocates
Required Qualifications
● Demonstrated ability to translate policy concepts and anecdotes into storytelling opportunities
● Story ideation, research, and creation on a deadline
● Strong attention to detail and editing skills
● Experience creating content for social media and using graphic design tools (Canva, Adobe, etc.)
● Comfortable learning new content management systems and editing web pages (HTML knowledge preferred)
● Self-starter who enjoys working in teams and also thrives working independently
● Experience using Google Workspace applications, the Microsoft Office Suite, and some graphic design tools
● Enthusiasm for the League’s mission to create a more Bicycle Friendly America for everyone and desire to help others do this work at the local level
Preferred Qualifications
● Video content creation skills a plus
● Graphic design and/or data visualization skills a plus
● Conversant in the benefits of bicycling and/or experience with local bike or transportation advocacy efforts a plus
Reporting Relationships, Compensation, and Benefits
This position is based in the League’s Washington, DC office but we are open to a full-time remote position for the right person. The Communication Coordinator reports to the Communications Director and will work closely with the Bicycle Friendly America and Policy teams.
The expected salary range is $42,000-$50,000 annually
Benefits include: employer covered health/dental/vision insurance up to 80% of premiums; 100% employer covered life insurance, short-term and long-term disability insurance; vacation, sick, and personal leave; a 403(b) retirement plan including employer match; and a fun working environment with committed colleagues.
Hours: Full-Time (40 hours/week)
Location: The League's office is in Washington, DC, however most employees currently work hybrid schedules, split between working from home and in the League office, as agreed upon with their supervisor. The League is open to a fully remote position for an exceptional candidate.
Work Environment
Home and/or normal office setting with low to moderate noise level. Up to 10% travel required for events.
