Job description

The Environmental Justice, Health and Community Revitalization Program is committed to unraveling systems of oppression to achieve healthy, sustainable, and just communities by addressing environmental injustices that have overburdened low-income communities, communities of color, and Indigenous Peoples by using our resources, cultivating strong partnerships, and prioritizing on-the-ground solutions that communities value.

To support our ability to connect frontline and fence-line communities with decision-makers on a national and international scale, we seek to hire an Environmental Justice Communications Coordinator for the Environmental Justice, Health and Community Revitalization team.

TCTAC Program Manager, EJHCR Director of Programs

Job Summary:

The Environmental Justice Communications Coordinator will be responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of communications strategies to raise awareness about Environmental Justice issues and promote the mission and initiatives of our program. This position will work closely with the Thriving Communities Technical Assistance Center (TCTAC) co-directors, Senior Program Manager, Policy Manager, Community Partner Specialists, and other NWF team members to ensure that our messaging is consistent, effective, and aligned with our programmatic goals.

Principal Duties (Major Areas of Responsibility):

Strategizing

  • Assist with developing and implementing communications for TCTAC community hubs as needed to announce and advertise their TCTAC activities
  • Assist with developing and implementing communications and digital engagement strategies that raise awareness about Environmental Justice issues and promote the mission and initiatives of our program.
  • Stay up-to-date on trends and best practices in communications and digital engagement and apply them to our work.

Content Creation

  • Coordinate the communications efforts for the TCTAC grant program.
  • Create and disseminate content across multiple platforms, including social media, email, web, and print materials.
  • With direction and assistance from the Communications program, coordinate media outreach efforts, including pitching stories to journalists, writing press releases, and organizing press events.

Collaboration

  • Collaborate with the Communications program, EJHCR team members and TCTAC partners to develop messaging for advocacy campaigns, policy initiatives, and community engagement efforts.
  • Assist with management of relationships with external press contacts, vendors, and contractors, such as graphic designers and printers, to ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget.
  • Assist with developing and maintaining relationships with partner organizations and community members to enhance outreach efforts and build trust and credibility.
  • Track and analyze metrics related to communications efforts to inform future strategies and improve performance, including outreach and engagement through the TCTAC Resource line and other methods.
  • Other Duties as Assigned

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following qualifications and competencies

  • Deep commitment to, understanding of, and experience with Environmental Justice, Climate Justice, and the intersection with Communications.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in communications or related fields.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing communications strategies across multiple platforms.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with an ability to distill complex information into clear, concise, and compelling messaging.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms, email broadcasts, content management systems, and relational data-basing.
  • Outstanding administrative and organizational skills, including the ability to produce, track, and manage multiple deliverables with overlapping deadlines in a high-performing, self-starting environment.
  • A clear and present sense of emotional intelligence and conflict resolution skills, including strong interpersonal skills, a sense of humor, empathy, grace, compassion, and cultural humility.
  • Commitment to justice, equity, and inclusion as organizational practice and culture.
  • Motivated by and dedicated to advancing the principles of racial justice and equity in addressing climate change and Environmental Justice effectively.
  • Aware of positional power and privilege, both personally and professionally, and its relationship to white dominant culture, systemic oppression, and hierarchies.
  • Maintains an ethos of excellence and growth in developing personally and professionally

Physical Requirements: 

  • Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example, using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about the workspace. The position requires mobility, including moving materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).

This position is based out of our National Advocacy Center in Washington, DC. Compensation and Benefits:

The salary for this position is $50,000-$55,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
