Job description

We are seeking a Community Outreach Specialistwho will support community-based transgender and nonbinary health and wellness surveillance. Individual will build community relationships; recruit, schedule, and follow up with participants.  Will coordinate with the program's Community Advisory Board; advise on data collection tool accessibility; support interpreting data; advise on accessibility of tools for communicating results; and share results with the community. This position reports to the Research Program Manager and splits time between working on-site at community locations (about 80%) and in the program office (about 20%). This position involves occasional evening and weekend work.  The Community Outreach Specialist will strengthen community relationships, grow participation, promote community engagement, and help to share our findings back with the community.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Representing the program in the community.
  • Supporting the work of partner organizations.
  • Listening to community needs and wants and sharing them with the program team.
  • Recruiting and screening participants.
  • Administering informed consent.
  • Scheduling and following up with participants.
  • Coordinating interactions with the program's Community Advisory Board.
  • Providing advice on making data collection tools more accessible.
  • Supporting interpreting data by indicating whether draft results seem likely given community experiences.
  • Providing advice on the accessibility of tools for communicating results like the design and wording of brochures, presentation slides, community-oriented posters, and one-page reports.
  • Sharing results with community through distribution of written results materials, supporting community presentations, and other methods.
  • Recommending and implementing new strategies for strengthening community relationships, growing participation, and sharing results with the community.
  • HIV counseling and testing.
  • Active participation in meetings and trainings with state, city, and local community-based organizations.

  • Demonstrated experience working independently and ability to work well in an unstructured environment as well as part of a team.
  • Strong motivation and work ethic.
  • Able to occasionally work flexible hours to accommodate protocol needs.
  • Willingness to perform community engagement for the program.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and follow procedures.
  • Ability to develop positive community relationships.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • Two years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with community engagement among transgender and nonbinary communities.
  • Consistently correct use of pronouns for transgender and nonbinary people.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Lived experience in the local community.

Starting Salary Range: Min $15.50 - Max $26.00 HRLY ($39,520 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
