Job Description
The Borough of Hanover is seeking a Code Enforcement Officer to perform a variety of technical and enforcement duties in support of the Borough’s Code Enforcement Program.
Responsibilities
· Uniforms and safety equipment provided; 30-day field training program required
· Receive and respond to citizen complaints and reports from other agencies and departments on alleged violations of zoning and related municipal codes and ordinances; conduct interviews and investigations; provide recommendations for resolution and compliance.
· Conduct field investigations and block sweeps to inspect for violations; attempt to make contact with property owners to resolve violations; issue and post warning notices, notices of violation, corrective notices, order to comply, and other related documentation as required by law.
· Maintain accurate documentation and files on all cases; prepare evidence in support of legal actions; appear in court as necessary.
· Demonstrate courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with the public and personnel inside and outside of the department; maintain confidentiality of work-related issues and Borough information; apply conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques.
· Performs related work as required.
Job Specifications:
Education/Experience: Any combination of education and experience which indicates possession of the skills, knowledge and abilities listed below. Experience in enforcement procedures in local Ordinances and or Codes is recommended. Must possess a valid PA driver's license and acceptable driving record.
Knowledge:
· Basic knowledge of and certification in the enforcement of the International Property Maintenance Code (additional training will be provided).
· Basic knowledge of computer use, typing, and software.
· Comprehensive knowledge of customer service and organizational principles.
Abilities:
· Ability to drive a vehicle and/or perform outdoor work at least 60% of the time, including sitting, walking, and bending; ability to perform administrative duties 40% of the time, including sitting and standing.
· Ability to occasionally lift weights up to 50 lbs. or more using appropriate safety equipment.
· Ability to interact with the public and participate in conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques.
· Ability to attend educational sessions outside of normal assigned hours.
- Ability to interact with children, teens, and adults of all ages and assist with questions.
- Ability to work effectively, in a team and independently, and communicate with the public, staff, and officials; must be flexible, reliable, and able to multitask.
- Ability to value and maintain privacy and confidentiality of public data and personal information; must display honesty and convey integrity to maintain public trust.
- An offer of employment will be conditional on passing pre-employment criminal background checks, including child abuse screening and fingerprinting, and physical examination including drug screen.
Compensation & Schedule: $25.00 / hour; 20-25 Hours per week; 8:00 am – 4:30 pm; Monday, Wednesday, and Friday weekly.
