The Clinical Nurse Educator works in collaboration with unit leadership and Legacy Health Clinical Practice Support educational support structure to assess, plan, develop, implement, and evaluate clinical education, staff development activities and quality initiatives in the specialty unit or program area assigned. Activities include planning and coordinating unit-based educational activities, participation in design and implementation of the LH clinical processes; competency assessment and education of nursing staff; assessment of staff learning needs; and assisting with leading quality initiatives. Other activities will be defined by the unit leadership.

 

GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

CLINICAL PRACTICE:

  • Facilitates the development and implementation of clinical practice initiatives that advance the nursing practice and reflect national and regional standards, local practice trends, and current research.
  • Maintains currency in clinical practice and knowledge of professional standards of practice through clinical practice, participation in continuing education, community and professional activities, and committee membership.

 

EDUCATION:

  • Works in collaboration with the program/unit Clinical Nurse Specialist or Clinical Practice Support staff to share resources and standardize educational processes across similar clinical settings.
  • Assesses learning needs of unit nursing personnel/ancillary staff and develops programs/presentations based on assessed needs.
  • Designs informational aids intended for use as references in the clinical area.
  • Leads unit staff in the identification of periodic unit based/program specialty area competencies based on high-risk, low volume, and identified quality issues.
  • Leads unit staff in determining how to validate periodic competencies.
  • Assigns training to unit based staff in E+.
  • Tracks staff completion of assigned training.
  • Coordinates unit based inservices, educational seminars, and learning opportunities.
  • Assists clinicians in identifying and securing appropriate patient and family education resources to address education needs of patient population.

 

ORIENTATION:

  • Precepts RN Residents, experienced new hires, CNA/CHTs and students.
  • Coordinates the assignment of preceptors to RN Residents, experienced orientees and students.
  • Coordinates the new hires schedule.
  • Provides feedback and coaching to new hires.
  • Assists in monitoring performance of personnel during the orientation process and communicates with unit leadership.

 

QUALITY & COMPLIANCE

  • Leads peers in implementation, compliance, and evaluation of clinical standards.
  • Collaborates with other patient care providers to insure consistent and realistic practice defined by clinical standards and available resources.
  • Assists managers to develop compliance plan, including monitoring, implementation and evaluation of compliance activities.

 

PROJECT MANAGEMENT:

  • Plans, organizes and implements new projects as assigned.
  • Coordinates new product/equipment implementation for patient care in collaboration with other LH departments and vendors for unit based implementation.

Education:
Academic degree in nursing (BSN or MSN/MN) required. 

 

Experience:
Two years of relevant clinical experience at proficient to expert level of practice required. Demonstrated knowledge of adult learning principles as evidenced by the ability to facilitate learning for patients/families, nursing staff or other members of the healthcare team.

 

Knowledge/Skills:
Highly effective teaching and communication skills.
Understands and applies adult learning principles.
Strong meeting facilitation and group process skills.
Ability to work effectively in teams, and independently.
Knowledge of Lean and quality improvement principles; ability to apply Lean and quality improvement process.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with staff and leadership to implement change.
