- Performs laboratory tests according to written laboratory procedure, evaluates test results for accuracy and clinical significance. Reports test results.
- Monitors test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
- Ensures that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
- Ensures that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and test systems are properly functioning.
- Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
- Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
- Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
- Performs clerical and computer-related documentation accurately.
- Prioritizes and coordinates work to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency.
- Uses the appropriate hand off communication techniques (SBAR) when appropriate.
- Assists in training and orientation of new employees and students.
- Accessions and prepares specimens according to laboratory procedure.
- Answers telephone inquiries of a technical nature from physicians or hospital personnel in other areas of the hospital while maintaining good phone etiquette.
- Maintains safe work area by observing all safety procedures and reporting any unsafe conditions or practices to the appropriate personnel.
- Participates in hospital performance improvement activities (kaizens, lean initiatives) when appropriate.

- Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of theory, test applications and process control of department.
- Demonstrates the ability to read, interpret, work-up and report culture results for all areas of Microbiology.
