Summary:
The Biology Program at the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) invites applications for a full-time, nine-month Clinical Assistant Professor beginning August 2024, with the option to teach a summer course. Qualifications: a Ph.D. in Biology or related field from an accredited university. This is a teaching position and will involve teaching courses for Biology majors in general biology, scientific writing, and our senior capstone course as well as life science courses for non-majors (general and honors). The successful candidate should demonstrate strong potential for outstanding teaching. Applicants with a record of college teaching, peer-reviewed publications, and experience in course development are preferred.
This is a full-time on-campus position and benefit-eligible non-tenured academic appointment. UIS faculty are expected to be available and engaged in the campus community to perform professional responsibilities as assigned.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Teaching: We expect the person to teach six courses both in the major: BIO 142 (General Bio II), BIO 301 (General Seminar & Scientific Writing), BIO 401 (Senior Capstone); and outside the major: CAP 141 (Biology and Chemistry of the Environment I), CAP 142 (Biology and Chemistry of the Environment II), BIO 306 (Plants and Society Lecture), BIO 307 (Plants and Society Lab). These are all required courses so they have consistent and strong enrollments. With an expected 4/4 course load for F/Sp, this instructor would also have two additional courses they could teach in their area of specialization to supplement our existing senior level electives.
Service: The successful candidate will be expected to fully participate in program-level service, such as curricular planning and update for Biology, career advising for students, and recruitment. There would also be opportunities to serve on the newly created non-tenure-track personnel committee at the college level. We hope to attract an outstanding teacher to this position; therefore, service in providing pedagogy workshops would be applicable. The specific service responsibilities will depend on the expertise and desires of the successful candidate.
Minimum Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in Biology or related field from an accredited university and strong potential for outstanding teaching.
