Children’s Counselor

The Children’s Counselor is a member of Anew: Building Beyond Violence and Abuse’s (Anew) Counseling Program department. The incumbent will assess children who have experienced or witnessed domestic violence and provide age-appropriate services regarding domestic violence education, address emotional intelligence, and support healthy family dynamics. As needed, the Children’s Counselor will also provide community outreach. In support of our great team, we offer a generous benefits package with a healthy balance of time-off to include:

Our professional counselors and advocates understand the dynamics of domestic violence and help clients identify and choose options in their life situations. What is the opportunity?

Under the leadership of Director of Counseling, the Children’s Counselor’s responsibilities focus on developing and implementing individualized treatment plans for each child on their caseload to ensure that established goals are adequately met. More specifically the duties are as follows:

· Provide individual counseling to children, ages birth to 17 who have experienced or witnessed domestic violence. Caseload to be determined in conjunction with the Director of Counseling.

· Obtain ICDVP certification within one year and maintain certification.

· Provide family counseling in conjunction with the Adult Counselors as needed.

· Facilitate parent education classes and support groups as needed.

· Participate in consultations to collaborate with Adult Counselors, Counseling Case Manager, and other members of the counseling department to support a team approach.

· Provide advocacy for clients with schools, mental health providers, court, DCFS, etc. as needed.

· Meet with Director of Counseling for clinical case supervision.

· Maintain and submit all case related documentation per established deadlines.

· Complete and submit weekly employment related paperwork per established deadlines.

· Participate in and represent Anew at various networking committees as assigned.

· Attend all required Counseling program and All-Staff meetings.

· Assist with training, community outreach, fundraising efforts and special projects as assigned.

· Participate in planning and implementing client activities.

· Work with other staff to maintain open communication and develop a team approach.

· Comply with the Counseling Program Manual.

· Conduct client assessments to determine eligibility for services.

· Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

· Master’s degree in counseling, Social Work, or related field.

· Fluency in both spoken/written Spanish and English preferred.

· LSW or LPC preferred.

· Completed 40-Hour Domestic Violence Training, preferred. Will be provided by Anew, if needed.

· At least 1 year counseling or internship experience with children preferred.

· Knowledge of normal child development and psychopathology.

· Knowledge of domestic violence dynamics and its effects on children.

· Familiarity with DSM-V.

  • Possess reliable transportation, proof of insurance, and valid driver’s license preferred.
  • Can operate general office equipment.
  • Must be able to stand/walk for periods of time and lift up to 25 lbs.

Job Location:

Working in person at our location in Homewood, IL Monday-Friday with some evening and Saturday hours may be required. Some travel in the community as needed.
