The Team You’ll Work With
The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Communications is at the heart of our mission to serve, empower,
and represent every resident of New York City. We are responsible for coordinating the citywide
communications strategy, including messaging from City Hall and all city agencies. Our goal is to ensure
the administration speaks with one voice, effectively and consistently communicating the
administration’s policies and their impact on everyday New Yorkers. The department includes several
teams: Communications, Press, Community and Ethnic Media (including Marketing), Speechwriting,
Research, and Creative Communications.
The Problems You’ll Solve
Reporting directly to the Deputy Mayor for Communications, the Chief of Staff is a key advisor and
instrumental part of the senior leadership team. In addition to managing staff, the Chief of Staff helps
to define the strategic vision for the Office and helps coordinate with dozens of city agencies on weekly
messages, interviews, media placements, social media posts, and more. The Chief of Staff also plays a
critical support role in the office, ensuring that day-to-day operations is coordinated and running
smoothly.
- Serve as the Mayor's Office liaison to agencies, including assisting with the communication of
- Direct the Deputy Mayor’s staff, holding regular staff meetings, and handling all hiring and
- Assist the Deputy Mayor with oversight of structural or organizational issues facing agencies, as
- Assist the Deputy Mayor with management of the Communications, Press, Creative
- Act as a project manager on additional mayoral initiatives within the Deputy Mayor's portfolio.
- Coordinate internal communications to ensure the Deputy Mayor is briefed and prepared for all
- Strategize and coordinate with senior leadership on policy issues, programs, and
- Serve as a liaison with communities, community advocates, elected officials, civic organizations,
and stakeholders to communicate City messages on behalf of the Office of the Mayor and the
Office of the Deputy Mayor.
- Communications responsibilities will also include identifying, organizing, and coordinating press
- Coordinate with all agencies, boards, commissions, organizations, and institutions relevant to
and efficient relationships between all stakeholders.
- Help ensure the Deputy Mayor is prepared for all events and has the appropriate briefing
About You
• Bachelor's degree and 10+ years of experience in communications or a related field, with a
- 5+ years leadership and management experience.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Being a strong writer, who can tell a story
- Advanced writing skills, interpersonal skills, and media knowledge required.
- Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment, often under short and shifting deadlines and in
high-pressure situations. The right individual must also be able to juggle multiple priority
assignments effectively.
- Proficient in all Microsoft Office products.
- Willingness to work non-traditional hours. The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Communications
does not work 9-5 hours and requires team members to be on-call nights, early mornings,
weekends, and on holidays. You can work a flexible work schedule.
- Prior New York City press experience and/or prior government, political, and/or campaign
- You must maintain confidentiality and use outstanding judgment on a daily basis.
Salary
The City of New York Office of the Mayor’s compensation package includes a market competitive
salary, equity for all full-time roles and exceptional benefits. Our cash compensation range for this role
is $160,000 to $211,150.
Final offers may vary from the amount listed based on candidate experience and expertise, and other
factors.
