Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) - Healthcare Facilities Division-(23143644)


The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) has a career opportunity within the Healthcare Facility Division.


The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) oversees and directs all aspects of clinical care provided to patients, clients, and residents for the facilities in the Healthcare Facility Division. The CNO provides leadership to the nursing and clinical teams as well as establishing policy and practice guidelines based on the population served. The CNO supports the facility administrators and nurse leaders to manage the facilities quality of care, finances, to implement treatment plans, integrate new medical technologies, provide staffing guidelines, and to create overall policy development. This position also interacts with all other parts of the organization including the medical staff; rehabilitation therapy; social work; psychology; dietary; housekeeping; maintenance; fiscal; personnel; quality improvement; training and development and health information.

Qualifications for this Career Opportunity


  • Extensive knowledge of nursing in a psychiatric setting.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive relations with internal and external entities.
  • Skill developing training program content, materials, and learning aids.
  • Ability to research, compile, and analyze data from multiple sources to identify and resolve a wide variety of issues and problems.
  • Meet minimum qualifications:
    • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Montana or able to attain licensure in the State of Montana prior to the first day of work.
    • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing is required.
    • Education and/or experience equivalent to a master’s degree in psychiatric or mental health nursing.
    • 5 years job related work experience in a high-level leadership position.
    • 5 years supervisory experience in nursing or a closely related field.
    • Other combinations of education and experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Additional Information


This position may be eligible for a statutory 4% an hour base pay increase effective July 1, 2024.


This position may be eligible for moving and relocation reimbursement. Specific conditions will be provided by the supervisor and must adhere to DPHHS policy.


This position is open until filled with frequent screening of applicants.
