The American Immigration Council (the Council) works to strengthen America by shaping how the nation thinks about and acts towards immigrants and immigration and by working toward a more fair and just immigration system that opens its doors to those in need of protection and unleashes the energy and skills that immigrants bring.

Position Summary

The Council is looking for a creative leader that will develop a consistent and compelling message to a broad set of stakeholders that will expand the reach of the Council’s work, elevate the Council’s brand, and help define the Council’s place within the immigration landscape. An ideal candidate is creative, resourceful, can create with limited resources, can quickly build meaningful relationships with others and must be an initiative-taker. This role requires a seasoned marketing, brand, and Communications leader, with strong management skills and the ability to forge new relationships with key organizations and brands with strong distribution channels.

Candidates should have experience leading strategy and narrative development in fast-paced, collaborative, entrepreneurial, and inclusive environments, alongside community-based field organizing and/or community development. Further, they will also bring a depth of experience fostering community connection and civic trust, and crafting and executing integrated marketing communications strategies and campaigns. Demonstrated skill in translating the Council’s priorities and core issues to broader target audiences and stakeholders and experience with partnerships and/or business development are a must have skill.

They will be responsible for strengthening and bringing greater visibility to the Council’s brand to enhance the fulfillment of its mission, increase supporter engagement, support fundraising, and, critically important, further its brand recognition. An important part of this role will be partnering with the Managing Director, Strategy and Programs to lift the work of the program departments, while simultaneously supporting and advancing the development of the Council’s narrative and culture change strategies to strengthen narrative power. The candidate will be expected to forge new relationships with organizations and brands with national reach.

The candidate will develop and execute a comprehensive strategic communications plan for the organization, including traditional and digital communications, media relations, marketing, branding, public relations, and the Council’s overall public engagement. They will work with the Chief Development Officer to develop and coordinate effective and consistent messaging between the Communication and Content and Consumer Brand Departments and the Council’s development and fundraising efforts.

This role is a member of the Council’s executive team and reports to the Executive Director. Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop and execute clearly defined marketing strategies in support of stated financial and mission-critical goals while advancing the Council’s brand.
  • Lead and manage integrated communications strategy development and execution, aligned with the Council’s newly identified strategic priorities, programmatic work, policy positions, audience data, and best practices, messaging lessons, and emerging insights across a broad and diverse field.
  • Develop and lead outreach strategies for reputation and brand management, and elevate the Council’s presence with the media, board, donors, the public, partners, and allies.
  • Streamline and implement processes that enable and expedite cross-organization collaboration, de-silo internal teams and leverage all the organizations’ talents to achieve specific strategic goals.
  • Develop and maintain contacts and relationships with media, educational institutions, non-profits, corporations, and influencers to elevate the Council's mission, vision, and work.
  • Raise awareness of the Council as a valuable resource, thought leader, and as a reliable and credible advocate for effective immigration policy.
  • Increase the Council’s relevancy and impact by tailoring and distilling complex concepts into easy-to-digest communications materials and serve as a “translator” of policy issues for our broader target audiences and stakeholders.
  • Develop metrics to assess the effectiveness and impact of communications, Marketing and brand initiatives and tools.

Strategic Business and Organizational Leadership

  • Set growth-oriented marketing goals and objectives, including building brand awareness, driving revenue, and attracting talent.
  • Develop revenue growth strategies by understanding and developing business strategies, understanding target marketing, collaborating on fund development by providing the Development department competitive differentiation, market trends, and metrics.
  • Lead, mentor, and inspire a talented team of Content and Brand, Center for Inclusion and Belonging, and Communications staff as well as industry or subject matter experts, with a deep commitment to the personal and professional growth of staff.
  • Demonstrate high emotional intelligence and skill managing in all directions and approach others with a deep level of respect and curiosity.
  • Manage a team of 10 with 3 Directors
Requirements:

Degree in Marketing, Communications, Business Administration, Psychological or cognitive sciences, or related field of study.

Qualifications Include:

  • Experience in strategic marketing communications, marketing or public relations, and experience working in an industry or institution with similar complexities and challenges to the American Immigration Council.
  • Successfully led marketing or communications campaigns
  • Sales experience
  • Minimum of 10+ years in a leadership role overseeing communications and marketing strategies, inclusion and belonging programs, and managing large teams.
  • Deep experience with brand strategy/positioning, insight development, communications planning, integrated marketing, attitudinal and opinion research, and a proven record of success with culture change interventions.
  • Demonstrated experience in areas such as brand management, direct marketing, advertising, digital marketing, consumer research, budgeting, project management, issue campaign advocacy, and/or narrative culture change strategies.
