Responsibilities:
The Nuclear Chemistry and Engineering (NCE) Group is seeking an outstanding chemist to support research on chemical and isotope separations and characterization in chemical and nuclear processes. This includes the Hanford Site cleanup, isotope production, nuclear, nuclear energy production, nuclear fuel cycle, and tritium production. This position involves planning and performing experiments with radioactive and non-radioactive materials and the subsequent interpretation and reporting of the data from these systems.

This work will require a broad range of analytical techniques and include handling radiological materials, collecting and interpreting experimental data and adapting experiments to meet project objectives. Will also perform the following duties:
  • Contribute to designing, building, and operating experimental radiochemical separation and characterization systems
  • Contribute to research on chemical and isotope separations of irradiated and radiological materials
  • Support efforts to develop new procedures and methods for separations of radiological materials
  • Design, set up, test, and operate separations test equipment/instruments
  • Perform technical tasks and subtasks, reporting of experimental results via scientific publications and conference proceedings
  • Work with radioactive, non-radioactive and hazardous materials on the benchtop, in fume hoods and glove boxes. Including mentorship of junior staff in these areas
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience -OR-
  • MS/MA -OR-
  • PhD
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Degree in Radiochemistry; Radioanalytical Chemistry; Materials Chemistry; Noble Gas Collection/Purification
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience publishing in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at scientific conferences. A demonstrated ability to work individually and as a team member
  • Experience setting up new laboratory capabilities
  • Experience handling radioactive materials and specifically have experience performing radiochemical separations. This includes gas-phase separations, column separations, solvent extraction, and other methods typical in separation science
  • Experience with utilizing Microsoft Office, including Excel software for data analysis and interpretation. Experience with other data handling and modeling software such as MATLAB, Mathematica, SigmaPlot is a plus.
  • Experience with alpha and gamma spectroscopy, liquid scintillation analysis, Raman, and UV-vis-NIR
  • Knowledge of the solution chemistry and separations strategies of an array of radioisotopes from elements such as Sr, Y, Zr, Pb, Bi, At, Rn, Ra, Th, and U. A candidate with direct experience handling heavy noble gases such as Kr, Xe, and Rn will be preferred
  • Experience programming and/or operating milli- and micro-fluidic systems and milli- and micro-scale chemical separation techniques. Experience with in-line and on-line monitoring of fluidic processes using an assortment of detectors and sensors is a plus
Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment:
  • Candidate will be trained and must perform to Radiation Worker standards (Radiological Worker II), as well as building and project procedures for managing radioactive and hazardous materials.
  • The candidate will be working with radioactive materials and chemicals in laboratories that are in radiological controlled areas, including radiation areas, radioactive material areas, and contamination areas.
Additional Information:
Due to business needs and client space, US Citizenship is required. Must have the ability to obtain a future security clearance.
