The Opportunity:
The Chemical Hygiene Officer coordinates, manages, and oversees the laboratory safety program for the university. Develops, implements, and manages a comprehensive lab safety program to protect people and the environment while supporting a high-level research and teaching environment.
Responsibilities:
  • Maintains and updates the UCF Laboratory Safety Manual and laboratory work instructions.
  • Monitors federal, state, and local health and safety codes and best management practices related to occupational exposures to hazardous chemicals.
  • Assesses, develops and provides laboratory safety program elements for academic and research laboratories.
  • Coordinates and manages laboratory safety and compliance inspections of assigned areas per applicable safety manuals and Environmental Health and Safety policy.
  • Provides non-compliance reports to PI's, department chairs, directors, and university auditors.
  • Works with campus officials to correct deficiencies.
  • Assists in planning, organizing, developing, and implementing policies and procedures for existing and new laboratory safety program areas.
  • Coordinates and manages the maintenance of laboratory locations and the Principal Investigator Registration Database.
  • Reviews research proposals for laboratory safety issues.
  • Provides direction to the new faculty orientation and biannual PI lab safety training.
  • Manages the chemical fume hood inspection program.
  • Ensures completion of biannual inspections, documentation, and corrective actions.
  • Conducts accident investigations for all laboratory related incidents and near-miss reports.
  • Serves on the UCF Laboratory Safety Committee.
  • Maintains records, develops lesson plans and conducts personnel training.
  • Maintains and updates PI orientation training and laboratory start-up and close-out procedures.
  • Trains team members to ensure consistent administration of these activities across campus.
  • Serves as a consultant on laboratory renovation and construction projects.
  • Participates in the development and update of UCF laboratory design standards.
  • Assists the EHS Training Coordinator in developing and updating training programs related to areas of expertise.
  • Participates in providing safety practical sessions and special training topics.
  • Assists with shipping hazardous materials/dangerous goods for the UCF community.
  • Maintains DOT Hazardous Materials and IATA Dangerous Goods certification.
  • Assists the UCF Chemical Safety and Security Coordinator in ensuring proper storage, identification, and reporting of hazardous materials per the UCF Chemical Inventory Policy.
  • May assist in approving hazardous materials purchase.
  • Assist with hazardous materials shipping services for UCF affiliated facilities for off-site shipments.
  • Reviews and verifies equipment and facility decontamination prior to surplus, transfer, or disposal.
  • Assists The Laser Safety Officer (LSO) with laser safety as a backup during times of need.
  • Serves on Emergency Operations Centers Essential Support Function #10 Hazardous Materials Response.
  • May need to respond to after-hours events on an occasional basis.
  • Maintains RCRA and HAZWOPER certifications and respiratory protection clearance.
  • Other duties as required in accordance with the needs of the University.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Master's degree and 2+ years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219(6).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Possess a valid Florida drivers's license.
  • Prior University experience.
  • Prefer OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification and current DOT hazardous materials training.
