CCA Academy: Located on the Westside of Chicago, CCA Academy started as a community based school in 1978 and became a charter campus of the Youth Connection Charter School (YCCS) in 1997. CCA Academy is seeking a Sustainability Assistant to help grow and maintain a rigorous and nurturing environment that prioritizes student learning through theme-based competency education in urban agriculture/sustainability complemented with restorative justice.
Job summary: The Sustainability Assistant works as a team member to develop and maintain: CCA’s aquaponic system including fish and grow beds as well as ten city lots that include two gardens, a bioswale with chickens and bees, and a food forest with fruit trees, bushes and hügelkulturs for growing produce. This is a “hands on” position that includes planting, weeding, harvesting produce and honey; working with and training students, working with teachers on special agriculture and ecology classroom projects, feeding fish, turtles, and chickens; care of beehives; planning, care and planting of both ornamental and vegetable/fruit plants (annuals and perennials) and general care of indoor and outdoor plants, animals, multiple aquariums (10, 40, 90, 125 and a 500 gallon tanks).
Personal qualities: Must like working outdoors, must have the ability and interest to work with and train High School students, community members and other stakeholders, must be comfortable working alongside teachers to create and implement classroom projects in agriculture and ecology, must have the ability to think analytically; must be physically able to work in gardens and green environments in all weather conditions; must have or be willing to learn basic construction skills and the ability to work with hand tools and power tools.
Qualifications: Related degree. Experience working in sustainable environments.
