Certified Recovery Peer Advocate

CREATE INC. is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides 24-hour-a-day Transitional Shelter, In-Patient and Out-Patient Rehab and Counseling services. CREATE INC. has served the Harlem community and the city and state of New York since 1970.

Job Title: Certified Recovery Peer Advocate

Job Summary:

The Peer Advocate is someone with lived experience with substance use who uses their experiential knowledge to support the recovery goals of individuals who use drugs and/or alcohol. Peers are natural support experts, meaning that the relationships they establish can lead to increased feelings of support, safety, and wellbeing among the individuals they serve. Through a combination of lived experience and professional training, peers will provide an array of services and support to treatment program participants.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to;

• Bridge transitions from hospital inpatient services and emergency rooms, the criminal justice system, homeless shelters and OASAS residential programs to addiction treatment at OASAS certified outpatient program.
• Provide outreach, engagement and motivational services to retain individuals in treatment.
• Provide education on medications
• Lead recovery groups
• Provide outreach/ recruitment in community locations

Positions Requirements:

• Must have obtained a Certified Recovery Peer Advocate (CPRA) Certification.
• Must have 2 years' experience as a CRPA.

Qualifications/Criteria:

• Familiar with community resources, specifically recovery-oriented resources.
• Knowledge and experience with recovery strategies.
• Experience with and knowledge of recovery services to high-risk populations including drug users, those in recovery, the homeless and sex workers.
• Commitment to advocacy and activism in the intersecting crises of homelessness, drug use, hepatitis C and HIV/AIDS.
• Understanding of commitment to recovery theory and practice.
