Peer Support Specialist Job Description:
Mental Health Awareness of Michiana’s mission is to improve the quality of life for those who have mental illness or mental health concerns in Michiana by eliminating stigma, promoting collaboration, and improving access to care. We do this through public and provider education classes and events, community outreach, referral assistance and through our Pro Bono Counseling Project. We are seeking a passionate and skilled Peer Support Specialist to join our dynamic team. A Peer Support Specialist is a professional who provides support to individuals struggling with substance abuse, psychological trauma, or mental health disorders. They draw from their own lived experiences to assist clients in their recovery journey. In this role, you'll play a vital part in helping individuals overcome challenges related to mental health and substance abuse. Your empathy, understanding, and personal experience will make a meaningful impact on their lives and meaningfully contribute to our mission.
Responsibilities:
One-on-One Support and Counseling:
- Regularly meet with clients to offer personalized nonjudgmental support, mentorship, and counseling in their journey toward recovery.
- Develop rapport and trust with clients.
Recovery Planning:
- Utilize your personal experience with mental health challenges to connect with clients and provide empathy.
- Collaborate with clients to create recovery plans.
- Identify coping methods and rehabilitation strategies.
Liaison and Coordination:
- Liaise with family members, our team, other medical professionals. Collaborate with other professionals to coordinate care for clients.
- Coordinate logistics such as medical appointments and therapy sessions.
- Advocate for clients' rights and needs within the behavioral health system.
Responding to Emergencies:
- Provide crisis intervention and management when necessary.
- Provide emotional support during critical situations.
Requirements and Skills:
Experience:
- Proven work experience as a Peer Support Specialist or similar role preferred
- Experience working with pregnant and postpartum women preferred.
Qualities:
- Ability to provide counseling services to individuals with mental health challenges.
- Proficiency in managing crisis situations and providing immediate support.
- Skill in effectively managing crises and implementing appropriate interventions.
- Knowledge of the behavioral health system and ability to navigate it on behalf of clients.
- Capability to offer guidance, support, and encouragement to individuals seeking recovery.
- Proficiency in using motivational interviewing techniques to inspire positive change.
- Ability to provide counseling services specifically tailored to individuals struggling with addiction.
- Understanding of social work principles and practices, including case management and advocacy.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- High compassion and attention to detail.
- Organized and Self Motivated.
- Bilingual preferred.
Training and Certifications:
- Relevant training and certifications as a Peer Support Specialist or willingness to complete certification.
Reporting Structure:
- The Peer Support Specialist reports directly to the Executive Director and works in close collaboration with other agency staff.
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: $17.69 - $18.45 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
