Salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with experience, as negotiated with the Athletic Director and Superintendent
Work year
Full Time, School Year position, with days and hours agreed upon with the Athletic Director, including school vacation weeks.
JOB GOAL
The Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) is to provide "Athletic Training Services"* to student athletes under the direction of the team physician or by written referral from a physician, and in accordance with Massachusetts state athletic training practice act.
*Athletic Training Services: The management and provision of care of injuries to a physically active person as defined in the state practice act with the direction of a licensed physician. The term includes the rendering of emergency care, development of injury prevention programs and providing appropriate preventative devices for the physically active person. The term also includes the assessment, management, treatment, rehabilitation and recondition of the physically active person whose conditions are within the professional preparation and education of a Certified Athletic Trainer. The term also includes the use of modalities such as mechanical stimulation, heat, cold, light, air, water, electricity, sound, massage and the use of therapeutic exercises, reconditioning exercise and fitness programs.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's and Master's degree from an accredited college/university in a related field
  • The Athletic Trainer will maintain State Licensure, BOC Certification, CPR/AED certification and Concussion training in accordance with those respective institutions

  • Experience working in a diverse public school setting with students with a diversity of strengths and needs preferred
  • Passion for working with students, families, and colleagues
  • Demonstrated aptitude for work to be performed
  • Commitment to remain current in content knowledge and instructional pedagogy
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, with children and adults
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and in conformity with state certification requirements.
  • Successful completion of Criminal Records Check (C.O.R.I.), Sexual Offender Record Check (S.O.R.I.), and fingerprints

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB (not limited to)

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE
Coverage:
  • Provide athletic training services for all home athletic contests
  • Away varsity football games
  • Home varsity ice hockey games (off Site)
  • Non-game day practice coverage
  • All MIAA tournament contests as directed by the Athletic Director

Injury Tracking:
  • Maintain daily sign in log of all athletes seeking athletic training services
  • Schedule and coordinate Athletic Training Room physician clinics with team physician
  • Maintain statistics and accurate records of injuries
  • Maintain seasonal injury tracking by sport and injury
  • Maintain annual concussion tracking and report findings to appropriate state agency
  • Provide the coaches and athletic director with a list of athletes medically eligible to compete under district and state rules and regulations

Communication:
  • Communication with parent/guardian of injured athlete to give adequate directions and instructions for further treatment and evaluation of injured athlete
  • Act as liaison between team physician, family physicians and specialists, the school district, athletes and their parents
  • Informs coaches, athlete and families of important aspects of athletes present condition, including concussion, wound care, first aide and follow-up care
  • Inform parent, athletic director and school nurse of any athlete in suspicion of a concussion

Treatment:
  • Provide care to injured athletes in accordance with National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and ATC professional practice act guidelines
  • Provide for on-site recognition, evaluation and immediate treatment of illnesses and injuries - both acute and catastrophic
  • Determine an individual's readiness to participate in athletics
  • Facilitate and perform rehabilitation and reconditioning treatment programs in accordance with findings of evaluations and goals established by the injury assessment or by the treating physician.
  • Schedules athlete treatment and/or other intervention as necessary and established
  • Instructs athlete in therapeutic exercise, and strength and conditioning programs
  • Provide advice to athletes and coaching staff of proper exercise and strength training techniques, nutritional guidelines, and safe practice environments

Safety:
  • The Athletic Trainer will demonstrate proper taping, strapping, bracing, and fitting of athletic equipment
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive emergency action plan
  • Advise on the selection, fit, function and maintenance of athletic equipment
  • Promote safe and appropriate practice and competition
  • Maintain a safe and healthy athletic training room
  • Advise on safe hitting techniques in collision based sports to reduce head and neck injuries
  • Provide In-service to coaching staff during seasonal coaches meeting of initial injury management, signs and symptoms of concussion, and the implementation of the emergency action plan

OTHER ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Adhere to the NATA Code of Ethics
  • Maintains confidentiality of athlete injury information in accordance to Federal HIPPA regulations
  • Participate in the development and implementation of a comprehensive athletic health care system
  • Develop injury and illness prevention strategies
  • Implement and oversee the administration of Impact Concussion baseline testing
  • Implement and oversee the administration of Impact Concussion post injury testing
  • Implement and oversee the Leominster High School concussion return to play protocol of all Leominster High School athletes diagnosed with a concussion
  • Develop and participate in annual review of Leominster High School concussion protocols
  • Ability to teach new techniques of athletic health care to staff when needed
  • Develop and maintain a supply budget and supply inventory for the athletic training program
  • Assist in the review of pre-participation sports physicals
  • Assist the athletic director as requested
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the MIAA regulations
  • Serve as CPR/AED instructor for Leominster High School coaching staff
  • Mentor Leominster High School students considering a career in the field of Athletic Training
  • Act as the strength and conditioning coordinator for in-season programs

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to move about and will be required to traverse throughout parts of the school building, on school grounds, and at off-site locations. On some occasions, it may be necessary to move quickly across even or uneven surfaces. The employee must also remain in a stationary position for periods of time.
The employee is expected to lift at least 20 lbs. The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms and sit, stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must frequently use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and use hand and arm strength to grasp tools and perform rehabilitation and reconditioning treatment programs. S/he/they operates a computer and other office productivity machinery (i.e., a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer). The employee must be able to input information into a computer and as well as read material from a computer monitor as well as handwritten or printed matter with or without visual aids.
The employee must be able to communicate effectively with students, parents, and other staff members in person and on the telephone. The employee must be able to see and hear on a continuous basis in order to ensure the safety of students as well as speak frequently to provide instruction. The employee will be working in a normal school athletic environment with an acceptable level of noise. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being and work output of students.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Athletic Trainer is not responsible for supervising any staff members.
