Job description

Poker has been played here continuously since 1854, it is in our DNA! We take it very seriously. For us, it IS the thing, it's not something you put in to keep spouses playing slots.

If you do not have a strong casino gaming background, especially a strong casino poker background or you cannot work the hours advertised, please do not apply.

Table games, surveillance, and even casino upper management experience has nothing to do with poker. There is no substitute for making or at least witnessing 100s of rulings at a poker table and understanding the differences between each one.

Description

The California Grand Casino, a local, family owned and operated card-room, is looking for a Shift Manager. We are seeking an individual who will take ownership of every shift s/he works and make sure that everything runs smoothly and efficiently. This individual will be professional, positive, a natural leader, and totally capable of handling a variety of situations in a calm, mature manner. The abilities to lead by example, focus and motivate a team, and provide excellent customer service are a must.

Currently we’re looking for someone to work 4-5 shifts as a Shift Manager. The open Shift Manager schedule is 1:00am-9:00am on Fri and Sat mornings and 5:00pm-1:00am on Sun and Mon evenings. That's a set schedule. You can either work those 4 shifts only or we can add one more day of admin duties to make a full-time schedule.

We’re looking for someone with a very strong poker background. Other gaming and/or food and beverage experience is also an asset. Flexibility and reliability are a must for all 5 of the people who work in this position. Those individuals must be willing and able to cover for each other in the event one of them needs time off for any reason.

Gaming

This position requires a very solid background in poker. Table games can be learned fairly quickly but understanding the nuances of poker and the rulings that govern its play (not to mention when to start and stop games) is much more difficult.

To be considered, you MUST possess the following experience, skills, and traits:

  • You MUST have a solid Poker background
  • MINIMUM of 2 years of full time managerial experience
  • Managed a minimum of 20 employees
  • A "sense of urgency" in performing duties
  • Excellent communication and reasoning skills
  • Extremely detail oriented
  • A strong ability to see the consequences of actions before they are taken
  • Quick learner
  • Excellent multitasking, prioritizing, and delegating
  • Lots of common sense
  • A certain amount of "street smarts"
  • The ability to get along with a wide range of people
  • A strong ability to apply knowledge to new and unusual situations
  • The ability to work on your own without immediate supervision
  • Computer literate
  • A healthy dose of compassion and respect for others
  • Humble and self referential
  • Ability to make simple repairs on the spot and be able to diagnose issues at least well enough to determine who should be contacted for larger issues

Salary will be discussed in the first interview.

We offer medical benefits after 2 months of work. The California Grand Casino pays 75% of the employee's medical premium. We also offer a 401(k) plan for retirement savings.
