Job description

The University of Virginia Career Center (herein Career Center) is seeking a Career Counselor/Advisor to support our mission of engaging and supporting students in the discovery and pursuit of meaningful lives. This position will work with the Exploration Team and broader career advising team to engage in direct service, which includes individual career advising with students, small group advising, and large group presentations and workshops. Additional significant components of the position include: advising and programming initiatives with a special emphasis on First and Second Year students, collaboration with faculty members and partners within the Division of Student Affairs, connecting with alumni and employers, and resource development. In addition, this role includes managing all aspects of a dynamic Career Peer Educator Program. Individuals will perform other office and University duties as assigned. Some evening and weekend work is required.

Career Advising Services (40%)

  • Provides direct student service through individual appointments and office hours.
  • Utilizes a range of career assessments to help students gain clarity of interests, identify majors and occupations and increase career-readiness.
  • Collaborates with faculty, especially in the College of Arts & Sciences, to provide holistic advising with a key focus on the exploration of major and career choice.
  • Provides support to students in all aspects of career development including but not limited to career exploration, networking, resume writing, interviewing, use of social media, job and internship search.
  • Engages with employers and alumni to collect and disseminate career-related information to students in support of externship, internship and jobs.

Career Services Programming (30%)

  • Actively participates in summer orientation presentations and resource fairs for incoming students and families.
  • Collaborates with the Exploration Team to develop cutting edge, creative, and robust programming for all students.
  • Facilitates creative and engaging workshops and presentations on a variety of career topics, particularly those that help students explore majors and career choice and begin to take action on reaching career goals.
  • Designs and delivers programs to engage students with the UVA Career Center and specifically the industry-specific Career Communities.
  • Works closely with student groups and organizations such as class councils, peer advisors, resident advisors, orientation leaders, CIOs, and affinity groups to develop and fulfill programing requests.
  • Collaborates with Employer Relations Team in support of On-Grounds Interviewing, career fairs, employer visits, and position listings related to internships and full-time jobs.

Career Peer Educator (CPE) Program (20%)

  • Manages all aspects of selective Career Peer Educator (CPE) Program, a paid, approximately 20-person student cohort responsible for delivering and staffing a number of programs and services that support the overall mission and work of the Career Center.
  • Facilitates a rigorous application and selection process each spring to establish cohort for next academic year.
  • Supervises a five-member student Executive Leadership team responsible for key program areas supporting the Career Center mission and serving as the structural foundation of the overall program.
  • Plans and facilitates two robust training retreats per year (August & January) to ensure CPEs are well-trained on a myriad of topics to provide workshops and direct service to peers.
  • Lead weekly meetings with entire CPE team to promote cohesive, motivated well-trained cohort.
  • Coordinates CPE staffing schedule for specialized drop-ins, outreach events and programs.
  • Works with Human Resources to ensure employment verification documentation is complete. Coordinates and approves time cards in Workday for payment.
  • Acts as the liaison to other peer groups and advisors across the Division of Student Affairs.
  • Coordinate the supplies, marketing/branding materials, and training events for cohort.
  • Communicates with Career Center staff on supervision, goal setting and professional development for cohort.
  • Conducts annual assessment of program to include benchmarking and best practices for student leadership programs. Provides strategic vision for the program adapting to evolving changes among student and Career Center needs.
  • Collaborates to manage peer-run space of 1515 which serves as a hub for peer to peer advising, resource materials for outreach and workshop space. Serves as a liaison with student affairs staff also utilizing 1515 building.

Administration and Technology (10%)

  • Supports Career Center efforts to develop relevant content and more extensively utilize technology in the delivery of student career-related and industry-specific programs and service.
  • Implements marketing recommendations to reach students more effectively.
  • In collaboration with other Career Center staff, provides benchmarking and recommendations regarding priorities for technology service delivery.
  • Designs asynchronous content to make career information and resources more accessible to students.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in education, higher education, counseling, or related field; relevant higher education or industry experience can serve in place of an advanced degree
  • Two years of related experience; student/graduate student experience will be considered
  • Well-developed organizational skills; ability to manage multiple projects
  • Demonstrated fluency in working with diverse populations
  • Strong customer service orientation; creativity, ability to assume responsibility, take initiative and work well independently and in teams
  • Proven ability to design and present creative and innovative programs/workshop
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills; strong oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two plus years of prior experience providing career counseling or advising services in a college/university setting
  • Experience with student leadership programs
  • Demonstrated program development and management experience
  • Ability to work effectively with students, alumni, faculty and employers
  • Knowledge in the use of career assessment models and tools
  • Ability to teach and to instruct in the use of programs, services, and resources in a career-related environment
  • Proficient computer and web-based skills
  • Related university or professional experience
  • Experience with Handshake, Symplicity, or other CSM applications.

Position Details

Applicants will be considered based on experience, knowledge, and qualifications. This position is primarily in person with a schedule of one remote day/week when not in conflict with major programs and responsibilities. Salary range: $49,000.00-51,000.00 annually commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a full-time, University Professional Staff position with full benefits.
