The Position

Business Operations Lead, gCS Machine Learning for Drug Discovery (MLDD)

We are seeking an experienced Business Operations Lead for Machine LearningDrug Discovery (MLDD) to join our gRED Computational Sciences (gCS) MLDD Leadership Team and gCS Portfolio & Operations Leadership Team. 

gRED Computational Sciences (gCS) is a newly formed function within Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED). We are a broad-ranging and deep community of passionate computational and Machine Learning scientists, bioinformaticians, software engineers, systems experts, and business planners. gCS partners closely with discovery scientists and clinicians to apply existing and emerging computational approaches (eg. Bioinformatics, ML/AI, LLM, automation, etc) that reveal crucial insights to enable and accelerate therapeutic R&D. We believe that this partnership across diverse domains of expertise is central to our success and are seeking to attract computational experts who bring a highly collaborative growth mindset.

About the Position

You will report to the gCS Head of Portfolio & Operations and partner closely with the MLDD Leadership Team. In this pivotal role, you will play a key part in shaping the future of our organization by strategically aligning functional objectives, enhancing operational capabilities, and fostering an inclusive culture. An ideal candidate will join ready to take a leadership role in fostering collaboration and driving operational excellence within a dynamic and highly matrixed organization. You will serve as a key liaison between various gRED collaborators and the MLDD Team.

Key Responsibilities:

Collaboration and Innovation:

Collaborate with MLDD Leadership Team to support the achievement of functional objectives, enhance operational capabilities, and promote innovative work methodologies through partnering with various teams across gRED.
 

Strategic Planning and Decision-Making:

  • Organize, manage, and track major gCS MLDD initiatives, providing synthesized information to inform decision-making for MLDD LT and gCS leaders.

  • Facilitate Leadership Team meetings, organizing and prioritizing critical issues to ensure efficient execution and decision-making.
     

Communication and Outreach

Curate communications and outreach to the wider gRED community, including Research, Drug Discovery, and Development teams.

Cross-Functional Partnership:

Engage closely with the gCS Portfolio & Operations team, actively contributing to the Portfolio and Operations Leadership Team.

Holistic Approach:

Embrace and embody an enterprise mindset, connecting functional activities to the broader organizational context, fostering a holistic approach.

Business Planning and Coordination:

Assume a key role in business planning activities, including budget reviews, resource forecasting, and goal assessments for the MLDD team.

Alignment with Corporate Processes:

Work closely with P&C Business Partner and Finance Business Partner to align corporate planning processes seamlessly with organizational needs.

Change Management and Innovation:

  • Advise on new approaches to address organizational needs and complex challenges within MLDD, driving relevant change management actions.

  • Investigate, identify, and implement new technology tools and processes to increase productivity.

Qualifications:

- BS/BA degree and 10+ years of relevant experience/ PhD and 6+ years of relevant experience, with 3 years specifically focused on Business Operations, program management, and/or alliance management.

- Prior experience in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or healthcare industries, with knowledge of the drug development process.

- Expertise in mobilizing teams in a highly matrixed organization.

- Strong operational skills, including strategic planning, business process management, project management, team facilitation, and event planning.

- Experience working with scientific or highly technical clients.

- Proven ability to challenge and improve business standards and processes.

- Excellent judgment, problem-solving, and ability to build trust with high integrity and discretion.

- Proficient with existing and quick learner of new technologies.

- Business or project management coursework or additional training (e.g.,PMP, Six Sigma, Lean, Design Thinking, Agile methodology, Scrum, etc.).

- Ability to develop and execute change management and communication strategies.

- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including strong presentation skills.

- Adapts quickly to rapidly changing business demands. 

- Travel to the New York site will be required, approximately once per quarter

Relocation benefits are available for this job posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is insert $144,000- $267,400.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.  A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.  This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
