DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Office of Business Opportunity ("OBO") is committed to creating a competitive and diverse business environment in the City of Houston by promoting the growth and success of small businesses and developing Houston's workforce. The OBO places a special emphasis on historically underutilized businesses and disenfranchised individuals by ensuring their meaningful participation in the government procurement process. The OBO provides business assistance to start-up companies, helps businesses navigate the city permitting and licensing process.


The successful candidate's responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following tasks:

  • Daily responsibility for the OBO Solutions Center, including resolving and responding to written, verbal and in-person customer service inquires in a timely manner.
  • Guide the public through the requirements for starting a business in the City of Houston, as well as disseminate information about program requirements to businesses, the general public and outside agencies.
  • Provides administrative duties for OBO's External Affairs division, including, but not limited to maintaining a comprehensive, updated database of small business contacts, OBO memberships, and business resources in the region; compiling program data for use in a variety of reports; and preparing correspondence for internal and external customers.
  • Maintains regular communications with the business community, making needed information available in a variety of channels (print, digital, telephone and web).
  • Helps maintain and publish OBO's business resource guides, along with other published content, in support of OBO's mission.
  • Provides administrative support and/or co-management of the City of Houston's annual business plan competition, Liftoff Houston! and the City of Houston's Turnaround Houston Entrepreneurship Program.
  • Represents the City of Houston/OBO at external events to promote start-up services and initiatives, along with other OBO services.
  • As needed, provide support for the implementation for other OBO BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT and workforce development programming.
  • Perform special projects as needed and other position related duties, as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS
This position is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc. There are no major sources of discomfort in a normal office environment.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Liberal Arts or a related field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
One year of responsible, professional administrative experience is required.
Directly related professional experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

PREFERENCES

Preference will be given candidates with the following skill sets:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to communicate comfortably and at appropriate level of summary and detail across multiple levels.
  • Effective time management and organization skills.
  • Proven experience producing social media content in a professional business environment and knowledge of best practices, strategy and metrics.
  • Proven experience with graphic design and photography for the purpose of producing flyers and announcements in a professional business environment.
  • Written and oral fluency in Spanish is preferred.
  • Degree in journalism, communications or marketing is preferred.
