Bus Monitor
JOB DESCRIPTION
Gilbert Unified School District
Purpose Statement:
The job of Bus Monitor is done for the purpose/s of assisting special education students while they are being transported to and from school; and providing some custodial work in Transportation area. Essential Functions
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Assists special education students for the purpose of providing for special needs during transport, safe loading and unloading from buses including both emergency situations and normal transport.
  • Assists with cleaning the bus for the purpose of maintaining buses in safe and sanitary condition.
  • Ensures teachers or aides are present to escort special education students to classrooms for the purpose of ensuring their safe arrival at school.
  • Instructs special education students for the purpose of enforcing rules and regulations.
  • Monitors students (e.g. unruly, disruptive, spitting, hitting, abusive language, kicking, etc.) for the purpose of preventing distraction to the driver or injury to themselves or other students/passengers.
  • Reports observations and incidents (e.g. discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate personnel.
  • Secures students and/or equipment with restraints, tie downs (e.g. wheelchairs, seat belts, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safety and welfare of students.

Job Requirements: Minimum QualificationsSkills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; performing multiple non-technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and understand multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: safety practices and procedures; basic methods of individual supervision; and approved procedures/techniques involved in supervising special students. In working with others, some problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicate with diverse groups; work as part of a team; exercise good judgment/discretion; apply basic methods & procedures to be followed to control or modify behavior; maintain confidentiality; schedule activities; gather, collate, & classify data; Ability to work with a diversity of individuals; Some problem solving is required to analyze issues, create plans of action, reach solutions; coordinate a number of factors in using equipment.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; providing information and/or advising others; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to significantly impact the Organization's services. Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 34% sitting, 33% walking, and 33% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and a generally hazard free environment.
