About the Mildred L. Terry Library and Chattahoochee Valley Libraries
The Mildred L. Terry Public Library is a case study of a Public Library uplifting its community. Far beyond circulation, the library continues to provide essential socioeconomic and cultural opportunities, as it has for seventy years. During segregation, it stood as a beacon of light, welcoming the Black community. Today, it is a gateway of knowledge and a vital contributor to Columbus’ African American history.
The Mildred L. Terry Public Library (originally known as the Fourth Avenue Library) was the first Public Library accessible to African Americans in Columbus. The original building opened in 1953, and in 2009 opened a new 16,000 sq. ft. modern facility nearly four times the size of the original. The branch carries a strong sense of history, and has played a pivotal role in the community as a champion of civil rights and equality.
CVL’s values of Service, Passion, Inclusion, and Community guide us in our vision to improve our community’s quality of life. CVL consists of seven physical branches, two bookmobiles and two automated 24-hour library kiosks. Anchored in the city of Columbus, Georgia, we serve a diverse mix of 250,000 in Muscogee, Marion, Stewart, and Chattahoochee Counties.
