Job description

Summary
This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Pacific West Area (PWA), at the Range and Meadow Forage Management Research Unit in Burns, OR.
In this position, you will research productivity, weed invasions, species composition, and water, carbon, and nitrogen cycles of Great Basin rangeland and meadow plant communities.

Duties
  • Field data collection in remote rangeland settings including common vegetation monitoring techniques.
  • Assists with geospatial data collection, processing, analysis, and data management (e.g., drones, GPS, data loggers, etc.).
  • Keeps detailed records, including data entry, data organization, quality control, and backup.
  • Tabulates, statistically analyzes and summarizes data using personal computers and software packages.
  • Collects, prepares, evaluates, and verifies samples and supporting records.

GS-05
Specialized Experience
: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-05 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-04 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting in one or more phases of a research process in a laboratory, or field setting; and operating common laboratory equipment.
OR
Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled. Related degrees include Agricultural Science, Agronomy, Biology, Natural Resources, Range or Land Management,Environmental Science, Botany, Geography, Environmental Engineering, and Ecology.

GS-06
Specialized Experience
: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-06 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-05 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience collecting samples in a field, laboratory, or greenhouse environment; and operating specialized equipment.

Education: One full year of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees include Agricultural Science, Agronomy, Biology, Natural Resources, Range or Land Management, Environmental Science, Botany, Geography, Environmental Engineering, and Ecology.
OR
A combination of education and experience as described above.
GS-07
Specialized Experience
: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-06 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in an experiment or research project related to ecology or geospatial sciences; collecting experimental data; and using specialized equipment.
OR
Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees include Agricultural Science, Agronomy, Biology, Natural Resources, Range or Land Management, Environmental Science, Botany, Geography, Environmental Engineering, and Ecology.

A combination of education and experience as described above.
GS-08
Specialized Experience
: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-08 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience collecting common ecological data; participating in an experiment or research project related to GIS, remote sensing, or ecology; and analyzing scientific data related to ecology or geospatial research.

Education: Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees include Agricultural Science, Agronomy, Biology, Natural Resources, Range or Land Management, Environmental Science, Botany, Geography, Environmental Engineering, and Ecology.
OR
A combination of education and experience as described above.
GS-09
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-08 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience designing an experiment or research project related to biology, ecology, statistics, range or land management, GIS, or remote sensing; analyzing scientific data related to geospatial or ecological research; and preparing reports that summarize results of research.

Education: Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees include Agricultural Science, Agronomy, Biology, Natural Resources, Range or Land Management, Environmental Science, Botany, Geography, Environmental Engineering, and Ecology.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
Applications will be evaluated in accordance with Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) Delegated Examining Procedures and USDA policy using category rating. Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of two or three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified.
