DEPARTMENT SUMMARY - The Bioinformatics, BioPharma team at Guardant Health is focused on partnerships with leading biotech and pharma companies who are at the forefront of cancer therapeutics and diagnostics. In this role, you will help lead the bioinformatics and data analysis in support of the late-stage oncology products and other emerging technologies.

About the Role:

We are seeking a highly motivated summer intern to support the BioPharma and Oncology Bioinformatics teams in development and validation of methods for detection of signatures associated with homologous recombination deficiency (HRD). In this role you will interact with a diverse team of biologists, software engineers, and bioinformaticians to interrogate data and develop models in a collaborative and fast-paced environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Utilize large internal genomic and epigenomic clinical datasets to brainstorm, explore, and apply novel bioinformatic and machine learning methods for HRD detection

• Present and communicate findings to stakeholders, participate in technical discussions

• Provide written documentation and specifications for transparency and reproducibility

• Currently enrolled on MS or PhD program in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computer Science or another related field 

• Familiar with Linux working environment and high-performance computing. 

• Basic bioinformatics skills in genomics, sequence analysis, statistical methods, and visualization 

• Strong proficiency in Python (preferred), R or another scripting language

• Commitment to reproducible research

• Excellent communication and presentation skills, ability to present technical research clearly and effectively

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of cancer biology

• Experience in development of novel algorithms for interpretation of NGS data

Hybrid Work Model: At Guardant Health, we have defined days for in-person/onsite collaboration and work-from-home days for individual-focused time. All U.S. employees who live within 50 miles of a Guardant facility will be required to be onsite on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. We have found aligning our scheduled in-office days allows our teams to do the best work and creates the focused thinking time our innovative work requires. For positions based in Palo Alto, CA or Redwood City, CA, the hourly range for this full-time position is Undergraduate $29/hr., Graduate $34/hr., and Doctorate $42/hr. The range does not include benefits and, if applicable, overtime, bonus, commission, or equity.

Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including, but not limited to, job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. If you are selected to move forward, the recruiting team will provide details specific to the factors above.

Employee may be required to lift routine office supplies and use office equipment. Majority of the work is performed in a desk/office environment; however, there may be exposure to high noise levels, fumes, and biohazard material in the laboratory environment. Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
