Job Description
We are seeking highly motivated and passionate individuals to join our Summer Internship Program! The Role:
The Graduate Intern - Bioinformatics and Genomics will be responsible for the development and/or improvement of the next generation sequencing (NGS) assays. The assays may include, bulk RNASeq, Whole Genome Sequencing, Whole Exome Sequencing, single-cell gene expression, and custom amplicon sequencing. Each assay will be followed by interpretation and decision-making based on QC metrics. Data derived from NGS assays during the internship will be used to complement internal requests that will enable scientists to generate hypotheses and explore data to understand potential product safety, biomarker discovery, and clinical outcomes. The work will include collaborating with various scientific groups including bioinformatics, R&D IT, and analytical development.
Responsibilities:

• Perform extraction of DNA and RNA from various sources
• Prepare DNA, RNA, and single-cell libraries for NGS sequencing
• QC and troubleshooting the experimental procedures and protocols for library preparation
• Perform Next Generation Sequencing experiments on Illumina platforms
• Perform experimental design for assigned NGS-related projects
• Prepare SOPs and maintain lab documents

Basic Qualifications:

• Be at least 18 years or older
• Have a minimum GPA of 2.8
• Eligible to work in the United States without work authorization sponsorship now or in the future
• Currently enrolled in a full-time graduate degree program at an accredited U.S. based university/college
• Completed at least one year of study at an accredited university/college prior to internship commencing
• Enrolled full-time in the Fall Semester at an accredited U.S. based university/college after the completion of the internship - with earliest graduation date of December 2024 or Spring/Summer 2025
• Able to complete a 10-12 consecutive week internship between May and August
• Able to relocate if necessary and work at the designated site for the duration of the internship
• Not be employed at the time the internship starts

Preferred Qualifications:

• Currently enrolled in PhD program with emphasis in Biology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Bioengineering, Biochemistry
• Hands-on experience on lab instruments, especially pipettes
• Hands-on experience on DNA and RNA extraction
• Interest in learning and developing assays for Next Generation Sequencing technologies
• Experience in NGS library prep or sequencing instrument
• Knowledge and understanding of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and regulatory policies Handling of raw sequencing data
• Proficiency with MS Office Suite
• Ability to identify issues and seek solutions
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively/Ability to work in collaborate in cross functional teams in fast pace, dynamic team setting
• Efficient, organized, and able to handle short timelines in a fast-paced environment
• Experience and/or interest in the Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical or health-care industry

The expected hourly range for this position is $19.00 - $55.00.
Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including education level and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary.
