Description

Strength Through Diversity

Ground breaking science. Advancing medicine. Healing made personal.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Requirements:

The Center for Disease Neurogenomics (CDN) Panos Roussos at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is seeking a highly motivated individual for a Bioinformatician III in Medical Informatics. The post will suit an ambitious and talented individual who is interested in applying his/her/their skills at the interface of human disease and genetics.

The appointed researcher will be embedded in an interdisciplinary team of clinicians, wet lab scientists, bioinformaticians, statistical geneticists and computational biologists. The center studies the genetic mechanisms through which risk genetic variants increase vulnerability for neuropsychiatric traits, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, Alzheimer’s disease and eating disorders. Towards advancing genetically based approaches for novel therapeutics discovery and drug repositioning, the center is leading large-scale efforts for generation of large-scale omics data in human brain tissue, including epigenomics and transcriptomics and the use of genome sequencing for big data integration. Distinguishing features of our translational arm of our center is the development of machine learning approaches for phenotyping, genome/transcriptome/epigenome-wide association analysis and the modeling of treatment response. Our population genetics efforts span several biobanks: MVP, BioMe, UKBB, All of Us, as well as smaller cohorts with deep phenotyping. As part of large consortia such as PGC and PsycheMERGE we are participating in global efforts to elucidate the genetic architecture of neuropsychiatric disorders.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement algorithms, statistical methods and software to analyze large-scale medical informatics data and perform integrative functional analysis.
  • Develop and maintain disease databases to annotate and interpret medical record data.
  • Implement and maintain phenotyping pipelines leveraging coded and unstructured data (with NLP and/or LLMs).
  • Perform rigorous and reproducible data analyses (including longitudinal approaches).
  • Develop projects and work independently on a variety of data analysis projects.
  • Learn and use bioinformatics tools for processing and analysis of large datasets.
  • Identify and resolve technical issues and propose upgrades to current software.
  • Publish and present novel research findings in academic journals and conferences.

Qualifications
  • M.S. in Biological Sciences, Bioinformatics, Computer Sciences, Statistics or related discipline, PhD preferred.
  • Six years minimum experience required with 4+ years of experience in medical informatics (can overlap with e.g. PhD). Experience with data science pipelines, clinical data, and health information technology preferred.
  • Firm grounding in statistical methods for medical record data analysis. An outstanding candidate will have experience in developing methods to track and model trajectories in datasets even when information is sparse (e.g. longitudinal treatment and outcome analyses)
  • Experience with biological datasets and genetic data is preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of relational and other databases (Oracle, SQL, PL/SQ), statistical software and programming languages, such as R, SAS, SPSS, Matlab, Python and big data management processes.
  • Track record of delivering complex scientific projects through high impact factor publications.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills with ability to work to defined timelines, both independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • An analytical mindset with problem-solving skills.
