About the Role
As a Senior Bioinformatician at Neochromosome, you will help support and extend Neo's systems and pipelines for data management, processing, and analytics. You will be responsible for prototyping new analysis methods and turning successful prototyped methods into robust, automated pipelines. As part of this role, you will also interact with other members of the computational biology and software teams to integrate analysis methods into our existing custom software stack. We are looking for creativity, insight, knowledge of existing computational methods, ability to develop new methods addressing our unique needs, and desire to join our multidisciplinary team. You will share responsibility for project success with wet-lab biological scientists, automation engineers, and software engineers.
What You Will Do
• Analyze and summarize NGS data such as genome sequencing, gene expression, metagenomic analysis, and genotyping
• Evaluate, troubleshoot, and improve existing workflows and data analysis pipelines
• Perform analyses on sample data and associated metadata for quality control, process development, and assay performance
• Act as a general liaison between computational and experimental teams to ensure efficient iteration on design-build-test cycle and to identify and solve problems that will benefit from computational approaches
• Develop bespoke NGS analysis pipelines for customers in our DNA Services vertical on an as-needed basis
What We Are Looking For
Education:
• MS or higher-level degree required in data science, bioinformatics, molecular biology, or adjacent fields, or equivalent professional experience
Experience:
• Expert experience with biological data
• Be the in-house expert on plasmid NGS data analysis
• Strong analytical skill, excellent quantitative skills, and working knowledge of general statistics
• In-depth experience with:
• Python and common analytical modules such as Pandas, NumPy, and related analysis tools
• Linux/UNIX operating systems and associated command-line tools
• Experience with implementing biological pipelines in AWS or other cloud computing infrastructures using "serverless" style approaches
• Sequence analysis (DNA, RNA, or other), whether short-read, long-read, single cell, or emerging technologies, using a variety of techniques such as adaptor trimming, read alignment, and de novo assemblies
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
• Great analytical skills and a logical approach to problem solving
• Ability to execute and thrive in a dynamic, collaborative, startup environment with in-lab and remote team members
• Ability to clearly communicate your analysis and findings with both technical and non-technical team members in both one-on-one and group meetings
• Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, and communications with others
Extra Qualifications:
• PhD degree in relevant field; postdoctoral training; previous employment in biotech industry
• Demonstrated ability to independently identify problems, create research and implementation plans, and complete them
• Experience with PostgreSQL or other SQL-based RDBMS
• Experience with Terraform or other IAC tools
• Experience working with a variety of data types from instruments used in molecular biology, such as plate readers, flow cytometers, FACS, and mass spectrometry
• Familiarity with molecular biology operations such as RNA/DNA isolation, qPCR, protein binding assays, and mass spectrometry
• Familiarity with microbiology lab work like yeast and bacterial culture, protein expression and purification, and flow cytometry or FACS
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
• Work is performed in a typical interior/office work environment
• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
• Limited physical effort required
Compensation Range: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $145,000 and $170,000 per year; base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and years of experience. We typically target mid-range for well-qualified candidates. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including equity and full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
