Job Description
The Bilingual Parent Educator will join the Maternal and Child Health Initiatives team by providing direct services to pregnant and parenting youth in group settings/socializations as well as during individual visits. These services are primarily parent support and education focused utilizing the Parents as Teachers evidence-based curriculum. This position will work closely with all community partner programs and referring agencies as well as other healthcare organizations. This position will support families to navigate the healthcare system, make community referrals, and serve as a resource for healthcare systems and social service programs. This position requires excellent planning, organizing, time management and communication skills. This position provides support to ensure success of Magoon Institute's annual goals and Lurie Children's community health strategy and organizational mission.
Department Description:
The Patrick M. Magoon Institute for Healthy Communities serves as the hub for all community-focused initiatives at Lurie Children's. The Magoon Institute is responsible for aligning the Medical Center's clinical, research, education and advocacy expertise with community engagement; supporting people, programs and partnerships that advance community health. This team provides engagement opportunities for employees, physicians and trainees and leads the development and execution of Lurie Children's Community Health Needs Assessment and Implementation Strategy. The Magoon Institute partners with clinical, public health and community outreach leaders and experts across the Medical Center to work towards the goal of advancing health equity and racial justice, and improving health and wellness for children, adolescents and their families across Chicago.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Create and maintain respectful relationships with families enrolled in any Maternal and Child Health Initiative program and recruit new families for the programs.
  • Meet with families (virtually, in group settings, or individually to deliver health, educational, nutritional and child growth and development information to parents using an evidence-based curriculum.
  • Prepare and deliver informational groups and support service sessions for parents, which promote positive family relationships, address parental concerns, disseminate information, and provide a comfortable forum for parents to share and receive support and feedback.
  • Support families to navigate the healthcare system and work collaboratively with healthcare partners.
  • Organize and maintain all required data collection and support in the development of data reports, as needed.
  • Identifies needs of program participants and refers to community resources, including health care, and follows up with referrals as needed.
  • Prepare and deliver educational trainings for community partners.
  • Assists with community outreach and marketing efforts, targeting local community resources, hospitals, and medical staff.
  • Knowledge of community resources and capacity to develop community cooperation to ensure that families receive comprehensive services.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently.
  • Other job functions as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • High School Diploma/GED required, associate degree or higher preferred.
  • Must acquire Parents as Teachers certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience required. May accept relevant course work hours in relevant area in lieu of work experience.
  • Must be bilingual in English and Spanish languages.
  • Must be able to use Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to travel to different locations, neighborhoods, and communities through Chicago (via public transportation or personal vehicle).
  • Good interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to collaborate with individuals from different backgrounds and disciplines.
