Position Summary

As a member of a multidiscipline team, the Automation Technician operates and maintains the process and utilities systems in a safe and competent manner. The Automation Technician must be self-motivated, self-managed and engaged in the planning process. They must also demonstrate to peers and Operations Lead, ownership of the facility equipment and systems. The Automation Technician role assures minimum impact on the facility operations and demonstrates good environmental stewardship in order to assist with the delivery of production targets, and maintain compliance with Group Practice as defined in Hess Operational Excellence Expectations.

 

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate a high level of knowledge and understanding around Personal and Process Safety.
  • Strive every day to ensure any work undertaken personally or by co-workers is done with a driven purpose to eliminate or reduce risk from the workplace.
  • Ensure operations are completed in accordance with regulatory requirements, company controls and guidelines.
  • Contribute to the safe and efficient operations through competent operations and maintenance of process systems and associated equipment.
  • Maintain the capability to troubleshoot, calibrate and maintain, safety and control systems and equipment which includes:
  • Field Instrumentation (pressure, temperature, level, flow, vibration sensors and transmitters).
  • Control Systems (process safety, process controls, component controls, system controls, metering).
  • Communications Systems (phones, radios, LAN/WAN, Paging Systems, Firewalls, Switches, Jump Servers, Network Monitoring Software).
  • Firefighting and Safety Equipment (Fire and Gas Systems (FGS).

 

EHS & Regulatory Compliance

  • Comply with the Bureau of Safety Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) and United States Coast Guard (USCG) regulations.
  • Demonstrate personal leadership in process and occupational safety at all times.
  • Review, understand and utilize the GoM Safe Practices Manual to identify, the hazard risk assessment level.
    • Identify Source of Energy and all hazards associated with them.
    • Understand how to identify hazard risk assessment levels.
    • Put controls in place to eliminate or mitigate the hazards associated with work tasks.
  • Ensure compliance with Hess Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) standards and practices as defined within the Hess EHS & SR Management System.
  • Understand and manage work related risk. In order to prevent accidents and harm to people, to reduce damage to the environment and protect the facility, achieve competitive performance.
  • Perform the duties of an Issuing Authority (IA) and/or Performing Authority (PA) in compliance with Hess Permit to Work system and according to competency level.

 

Production and Technical Integrity Performance

  • Ensure that primary and support process controls, protection and IT systems are monitored and maintained, including field devices, packaged equipment, core systems, emergency support, marine advisory, ancillary and the IT network infrastructure.
  • Provide instrumentation and controls technical input to projects and turnaround (TAR) preparation as required.
  • Ensure shift and crew-change handovers are accurately recorded in the appropriate log and in compliance with the Guidance on Shift Handovers.
  • Provide operations with functional support, as required, to highlight potential process safety issues.
  • Understand and comply with the Management of Change (MoC) process for all

          procedural, equipment or process changes as needed.

  • Be aware of performance standards and their relevance to process operations,

          maintenance and performance requirements.

  • Ensure that maintenance defects are recorded in CMMS in a timely manner and to the appropriate level of detail as defined by the Planned Maintenance (PM) schedules and procedures.
  • Supervise ad-hoc vendors and visitors ensuring they adhere to the site-specific safety standards.
  • Comply with the management of instrument systems and control of the override process.
  • Understand and communicate the risks associated with all overrides.
  • Monitor the emergency shutdown systems (ESS) and fire and gas system (FGS) to ensure shutdown events follow regulatory compliance and Hess standards.
  • Carry out regular reviews of critical processes, and communicate findings as needed for standing alarms, inhibits and loop faults.
  • Log and maintain a register of all equipment software revisions. Retain all copies of the most recent revisions on a separate laptop.

 

Operations Excellence

  • Actively participate in the Hess Lean Continuous Improvement (CI), process, striving to improve operating and run-time efficiency.
  • Participate in root-cause failure investigations as required to prevent re-occurrence and help identify "trigger events" as failure cause.
  • Ensure the technical integrity of instrumentation equipment and maintenance standards,recommending changes to the maintenance strategy, policy and procedures as required and in compliance with the Management of Change (MOC) process.
  • Fully engage and comply with the System Ownership plan.
  • Inform supervisors of any maintenance activities that could potentially have a negative impact on production.
  • Be aware of and challenge all maintenance and consumable costs incurred within the operations teams automation activities.
  • Actively engage in coaching and sharing of technical knowledge with team members.

 

Performance

  • Regularly review personal performance objectives and progress with your MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR (MS).
  • Jointly agree upon personal performance objectives with the MS and implement / maintain management and career development to improve and enhance contribution to the overall team and safety of the facility and operation.

 

Training and Competency

  • Become familiar with and demonstrate understanding of the Hess Competency

          Management System for GoM. (Refer to the E&P Competence Assurance & Training

          Standard as well as the GoM Technician Competency Matrix.)

  • Understand and comply with BSEE SEMS regulatory requirements of Elements 6 (Safe Work Practices) and Element 7 (Training)
  • Review and become aware of the competency profile for the role and training

          requirements, with agreement to work with qualified competency assessor(s) to

          determine capability measured against the Hess Standard for GoM.

  • Comply with and enforce Hess Process Control Domain and Cybersecurity standards.
  • Maintain ownership and tracking of personal training / learning and career development.
  • Work with MS to achieve access to next role competencies in order to continuously improve skills and promote within the organization as openings become available.

 

Emergency Response

  • Understand assignment, act as member of the emergency response team and comply with the responsibilities assigned as defined in the Emergency Response Plan (ERP).
  • Participate in emergency response exercises to ensure a full understanding and demonstrated capability of the ERP process and procedures.
  • In the event of any emergency onboard the facility, follow the orders of the Incident Commander.

 

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED) required
  • Associates Degree with Automation highly desired
  • Must have good teamwork and leadership skills
  • Must be independent/ autonomous, requiring little day-to-day guidance
  • Strong knowledge of NEC, API codes (such as RP 14C), BSEE requirements, NIST 800-82 and I&E installation practices
  • Strong experience and working knowledge of PC applications (esp. Excel, Word)
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience working with Offshore process production equipment
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience working with Allen-Bradley PLCs and HMI's
  • Strong working knowledge of RSLinx, RSLogix & Factory Talk
  • Should have working knowledge of virtual environments and virtual server design
  • Should have knowledge with PC backup software
  • Should have knowledge with Modbus, Ethernet, DeviceNet and ControlNet technologies
