The Houston-Galveston Area Council is one of the largest regional planning commissions in the country with a diverse service area of 13 counties and more than7million people. We are the pulse of our region addressing issues that cross city limits and county lines every single day.

What will I bedoing?

u Advises staff on the interpretation and application of agency policies and state and federal laws.

u Acts as a company advocate and advisor with respect to legal matters and provides guidance concerning legal rights and obligations, and recommends best practices and courses of action related to legal issues.

u Assist with drafting, reviewing, and updating agency policies and procedures.

u Perform legal research utilizing both written and electronic sources. Gather and compile facts and relevant case information. Many of the legal issues addressed will revolve around contracts; employment law; law as it applies to a political subdivision for varying issues; and, conflicts of interest and ethics as it relates to public officials.

u Collaborate with all agency departments and provide legal expertise as needed for one time or ongoing projects.

u Assist with reviewing, negotiating, and drafting agency agreements.

u Prepares legal memoranda, proposals, and reports.

KeyQualifications

u Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.

u Strong analytical and research skills.

u Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

u Detail-oriented and highly organized.

u Excellent problem-solving skills.

u Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

u Experience drafting and reviewing contracts.

u Experience in labor and employment law preferred, but not required.

u Experience in administrative law preferred, but not required.

u Professional while friendly and approachable.

u Admitted to practice law in Texas.
