The School of Dance is committed to providing its majors the best environment for artistic, intellectual and educational growth. We teach a comprehensive curriculum with an emphasis on rigorous modern dance and ballet technique which serves as preparation for our students' participation as active members of the dance community. By performing works of master choreographers and emerging artists our majors contribute to the cultural vitality of the university and region.
About the Position:
The Athletic trainer is a healthcare provider in the School of Dance. The individual in this position is responsible for managing the treatment and care of all dance majors injuries and injury prevention. They maintain medical records, document physicals, coordinate medical appointments and provide ongoing screening and conditioning for majors.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain the performing arts athletic training program including: injury prevention programs, injury evaluations, injury management, injury treatment and rehabilitation, educational programs, and referrals to counseling;
- Provide athletic training services to dance major students within the SOD. In the event a student sustains a non-performing arts related injury/illness, the licensed certified Athletic Trainer may provide athletic training services to the student within their scope of practice and will refer the student out for additional medical care as needed;
- Provide athletic training services during performances;
- In coordination with the Director, adjust the Performing Arts Athletic Training facility hours as needed for performance weeks;
- Work under the medical supervision of a licensed medical physician in accordance with medical service agreements;
- Assist in patient referrals to outside medical providers for healthcare outside the scope of practice of athletic training;
- Be responsible for daily medical supervision of the Performing Arts Athletic Training facility;
- Coordinate and schedule athletic training examinations and assist in medical referrals for students to determine their ability to participate in technique classes, rehearsals, and/or performances via the student health portal web scheduling or email;
- Communicate with faculty regularly regarding technique class participation status regarding injury and/or illness of students;
- Provide injury prevention consultation to inform instructions for faculty where appropriate;
- Complete inventory of medical supplies and manage supplies for the performing arts athletic training clinic;
- Be proficient in the use of health information system Athletic Trainer System and maintain accurate recordkeeping and documentation;
- Comply with George Mason University Professional Practice, Rules and Regulations;
- Comply with Virginia state laws of confidentiality; and
- Exhibit behavior in compliance with NATA Code of Professional Practice.
- Master's Degree in athletic training or a related field;
- Certified by the Board of Certification (BOC);
- Maintains Virginia state athletic training licensure;
- Meets criteria for certification as established in the National Athletic Training Association and Board of Certification with respect to continuing education units (CEU'S), and First Aid CPR/AED certification;
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, EMR, etc.); and
- Strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to foster an engaging, innovative, and collaborative workplace culture.
- Experience working with performing arts athletes preferred.
