Attend team practices and games as assigned by the Athletic/Activities Director and / or Building Administrator. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, employees, equipment, materials, and facilities.Perform preventative techniques of sports medicine such as wrapping ankles, fingers, or wrists in protective gauze and adhesive tape to support muscles and ligaments, and other appropriate practices. Maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment and inform the Athletic Director when supplies or equipment are needed.Coordinate decision-making regarding participation of injured athletes with coaches and the Athletic/Activities Director.
Facilitate communication between the coach and parent[s] and / or between parent[s] and other health professionals regarding a student athletes' fitness to participate in practice or in a game. Make appropriate referrals to physicians and /or medical treatment facilities. Maintain licensure / certification at the state and national level, assume responsibility for professional growth, and keep materials, supplies, and skills up to date.Comply with and support school and division regulations and policies.Model non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
Work cooperatively with other members of the school staff. Perform other duties as assigned by the Athletic/Activities Director or Building Administrators in accordance with school / division policies and practices. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of athletic training; thorough knowledge of education principles, practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching; thorough knowledge of school division rules, regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, students and parents; ability to operate a personal computer.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: The Trainer must hold a National Trainers Association Certificate and possess a license to practice in Virginia.
In addition, the Trainer must be a graduate of an accredited college or university. A master's degree in Athletic Training is preferred. A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Athletic trainer physical demands include; frequent walking, stooping, standing, lifting up to 50 pounds and occasional lifting of equipment / objects weighing in excess of 75 pounds. Other physical activities include; travel with students, coaches, and teams on related trips, vocal communication skill, visual acuity, and movement of students by wheelchair and / or other medical devices. Trainer duties are performed in settings related to athletics and include but are not limited to: gymnasiums, aquatic centers, sports fields, locker rooms, activity buses, weight rooms, and other home and away recreational areas.
