Description of Work:

The Department of Agronomy and Horticulture at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) is seeking applications for a Plant Sciences Teaching position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor of Practice. This 12-month (calendar year), non-tenure track appointment will provide instruction in association with the 3+1 cooperative Plant Biology/Plant Protection Program that exists between the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), and Northwest Agricultural & Forestry University (NWAFU) in Yangling, China. The apportionment is 90% teaching and 10% research. This position is based in Lincoln, Nebraska but travel to NWAFU in Yangling, China will be required for some teaching duties.
The Plant Sciences Teaching faculty will contribute to the integrated, research, outreach, and teaching land-grant mission of the home unit and IANR, as an effective scholar and citizen, including supporting student recruitment and IANR science literacy.
The incumbent will be responsible for teaching undergraduate courses in fundamental biology, plant physiology, botany, and other related areas such ecology. Teaching responsibilities will be primarily carried out in Yangling, although instruction in Lincoln or via online formats may be possible. The incumbent will lead instruction in at least two courses per NWAFU semester and assist and/or team-teach other upper-level Plant and Soil courses. Assignments may change over time as needed.
As appropriate to the appointment, the Plant Sciences Teaching faculty will: develop a high-impact, nationally and internationally recognized teaching program in a self-identified area of plant science; seek and establish effective disciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborations including effective integration with educational programming (e.g., Center for Transformative Teaching, Agronomy and Horticulture Online Program, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources); connect with department/CASNR teaching peers, stakeholders, agency, and/or industry partners to strengthen educational and research programming; effectively obtain and leverage external and internal support (grants, fee revenue, etc.) for position activities; mentor students; publish in peer-reviewed journals, and participate in scientific meetings and other appropriate professional activities; and, translate research-based information into learner-centered products. This includes creating scholarly, innovative, and high-impact learning programs and tools; identifying issues and opportunities focused on learner needs and emerging regional and national issues with international relevance; measuring the impact of programs and communicating results to administrators, stakeholders, users, and media; and mentoring colleagues through professional development, translational research, grants, and professional writing.
In addition to the above-described duties, the Plant Science Teaching faculty will be expected to accept committee assignments, reporting responsibilities, and other special ad hoc assignments as requested at the administrative unit, college/division, institute, and/or university level.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Plant Biology, Plant Sciences, Plant Biochemistry, Crop Physiology, Weed Sciences, or a related field at the time of hire.
  • Demonstrated undergraduate teaching experience in life sciences, such as foundational biology, genetics, biochemistry, or related courses.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Research experience in plant protection sciences and/or agricultural sciences.
  • Evidence of teaching scholarship including creative works, teaching and learning products, technical reports, academic journals, and/or industry publications.
  • Excellent communication skills using a variety of methods and platforms.
  • Evidence of ability to form and collaborate in teams.
  • Experience working internationally.
