Job description

Overview:

The EPA National Student Services Contract has an immediate opening for a full time Communications Specialist position with the Office of Research and Development at the EPA facility in Research Triangle Park, NC.

The Office of Research and Development at the EPA supports high-quality research to improve the scientific basis for decisions on national environmental issues and help EPA achieve its environmental goals. Research is conducted in a broad range of environmental areas by scientists in EPA laboratories and at universities across the country.

What the EPA project is about

The Center for Computational Toxicology and Exposure (CCTE) supports ORD by providing solutions-driven research to rapidly evaluate the potential human health and environmental risks due to exposures to environmental stressors and ensure the integrity of the freshwater environment and its capacity to support human well-being. CCTE researchers are developing and applying cutting edge innovations in methods to rapidly evaluate chemical toxicity, transport, and exposure to people and environments.

What experience and skills will you gain?

As a team member, you will assist the Communications Director with the communication and administrative duties required to support and maintain a robust outreach program, including the administration, management, and communication of results as well as tracking impacts resulting from CCTE research activities.
Responsibilities:
Management and Administrative responsibilities:
  • Assist with evaluating the effectiveness of CCTE’s communications campaigns. This will include maintaining a database of stakeholders, interviewing stakeholders, tracking mentions of CCTE research in the media, monitoring CCTE web trends, and determining how communications activities are influencing the usage of CCTE;
  • Assist with the planning and development of strategic social media and digital initiatives targeting the scientific community. The student contractor will make recommendations for social media approaches; be responsible for social media benchmarking, monitoring and analysis of social media trends and impact; and
  • Maintaining records of meetings, correspondence, and action documents, and maintain a system to track projects in progress.
Communications-related responsibilities:
  • Assist with event planning for webinars, conferences, workshops, stakeholder meetings, and other public events. This includes preparation of posters and other display materials, development of science demonstrations and PowerPoints, and development of fact sheets and other communications materials that explain CCTE research. This may include traveling to conferences, workshops, stakeholder meetings, and other public events where CCTE research is being;
  • Assist with development of internal and external web content explaining CCTE research. Write and edit communications materials for posting on EPA Internet and Intranet sites. Web products include science features, research summaries, online newsletters, program overviews, Q & A’s, researcher bios, and web videos. External web content shall be written so it is engaging and understandable; and
  • Assist in writing products for the scientific media explaining CCTE research. Products include press releases, media advisories, press kits, Q & A’s, key messages, summaries describing the impact of scientific papers published in journals and other related products.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Work Experience, and Education

  • Previous work, volunteer or school experience writing about complex scientific topics, as evidenced by a scientifically-oriented writing;
  • Previous course work learning how to measure the effectiveness of communications campaigns including tracking media coverage, social media metrics and website;
  • Previous course work or experience writing website content, blogs, tweets, and Facebook posts for communications;
  • Work or school experience in administration support functions including managing records (electronic and hardcopy), coordinating webinars or other meetings, and updating; and
  • Strong proof reading and editing skills in the English.

Location:This job will be located EPA’s facility in Research Triangle Park, NC.

Salary: Selected applicant will become a temporary employee of ORAU and will receive an hourly wage of $23.37 for hours worked.

Hours: Full-time.

Travel: Occasional overnight travel may be required.


Expected start date:
The position is full time and expected to begin May 2024. The selected applicant will become a temporary employee of ORAU working as a contractor to EPA. The contract renews each May through 2025.

Qualifications:
  • Be at least 18 years of age and
  • Have earned at least a bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, technical communications, environmental studies, or a related field of study from an accredited university or college within the last 24 months and
  • Be a citizen of the United States of America or a Legal Permanent Resident.


EPA ORD employees, their spouses, and children are not eligible to participate in this program.
