POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Vice President for Finance and Administration, the Associate Vice President for Financeand Controller is a senior level management and leadership position within the Finance and Administration Division responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and maintenance of all University financial records and systems. The incumbent directs, coordinates, and provides strategic oversight as well as strong administrative leadership of the University's general accounting and budgeting, financial operations, analysis and reporting, grant and endowment accounting, tax reporting, financial systems management, and external audits. The position consults and collaborates with senior University leaders and several of the Board of Trustees' committees. The position oversees the financial component of our enterprise resource planning system.

Essential Functions Statements
  • LEADERSHIP: Lead and develop a talented team of Finance and business office staff members. Translate and communicate key strategic and operational information from all levels of the organization to and from the Finance and business office. Advance initiatives as directed by the CFO.
  • OVERSIGHT: Oversee, among other areas: financial analysis, banking, treasury, endowment, financial statements, external audit, tax preparation, and grant accounting. Monitors the University's financial records to ensure precision and integrity of all data. Promotes an institutional environment that supports observance of the highest ethical standards of conduct and works with University campus units to implement processes and procedures to reduce vulnerability to fraud, abuse and waste.
  • ANALYTICS: Analyzes complex financial and statistical data and prepares accounting statements, summary conclusions and recommendations in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • COMPLIANCE: Conducts ongoing research, monitors, interprets, and implements generally accepted accounting principles, tax rules, grant requirements, and other regulatory and compliance requirements.
  • TECHNOLOGY: Leads in the development and/or improvement of the Enterprise accounting system, controls and reporting processes. Works collaboratively with others to coordinate and assist with any system upgrades and/or new system implementations and provides systems related training for staff.
  • SERVICE: Serve as a key member of the DePauw Finance and Administration Leadership Team alongside the Director of Human Resources, AVP for Facilities, Chief Information Officer, Director of the Business Office, and Interim Director of Strategic Initiatives.
  • BOARD RELATIONS: Provide support for the VPFA and the Business Financial Affairs and Investments Committees.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements
Education: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (four-year college or university) required. CPA preferred.
Experience: Minimum of 7 years of experience in Finance or Accounting (not necessarily in higher education).
Computer Skills
  • Must be technically proficient in Microsoft Office suite applications.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Access and Excel preferred, not required.
  • Experience with Workday Platform preferred, not required.

Communication/Language: Strong: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
Math Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Certificates Licenses
CPA designation desired
Other Requirements:
Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the following:
  • DePauw University's mission and purpose.

  • Financial and accounting practices and reporting, including chart of accounts design, asset management, general ledger, budgeting, payroll, payables and receivables, purchasing and expense management.
  • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, FASB standards, Fund Accounting Principles, and Internal control standards.
  • Current and emerging trends in financial technologies and analytical tools, and issues.
  • Understanding of current issues and regulations impacting higher education and non-profit entities.
  • Financial enterprise application systems, such as Workday or similar financial systems.
  • Applicable federal and state laws and regulations that impact all facets of University policies and procedures.
  • Business continuity practices.

Management training: Continuing professional education to keep up with the changing requirements and demands of the profession and industry.
