Job Description
General Description:The Associate Vice President (AVP) of Retention and Engagement reports to the Vice President of Student Affairs and serves as a member of the Student Affairs leadership team. The AVP for Engagement and Retention leads and directs a comprehensive and integrated student engagement program to enhance the students' sense of belonging at Northern Virginia Community College. The AVP provides leadership and accountability for the administration, development, assessment, and improvement of student services and student experiences that meet and support Northern Virginia Community College's commitment to access and inclusion. This position collaborates in a cross-divisional and cross-institutional approach to boost the campus Engagement and co-curricular engagement of students. The AVP serves as a student-centered leader who seeks to create a thriving campus life environment that contributes to the holistic success of students.
The AVP has oversight of Academic Advising, Student Life Engagement and Leadership, Student Rights and Responsibilities, Threat Assessment, and Strategic Planning. The AVP serves as Chair for the College's Threat Assessment Team.
Duties and Tasks:
  • Provide strategic leadership in academic advising to enhance student success and progression.
  • Foster a vibrant and inclusive student life by developing engaging programs and initiatives that promote leadership and community involvement.
  • Uphold and communicate student rights and responsibilities, ensuring a fair and supportive environment for all.
  • Implement and oversee threat assessment protocols to maintain a safe and secure campus environment.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans to achieve division and institutions goals.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of strategic plans related to student retention and engagement.
  • Develop and implement academic success and intervention/retention strategies to support academic success, engagement, and graduation rates.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure student success and Retention.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations related to student rights and responsibilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in higher education administration, student affairs/services, or in a field appropriately related to the position. Degree(s) must be from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Several years of progressively responsible experience in student support services or related areas, including leadership and supervisory roles.

  • Extensive budget experience.
  • Three or more years of experience working in the community college setting.

  • Experience working with evidence-based practices in student support.
  • Experience writing grants and grants supervision and management.
  • Experience working collaboratively and effectively across higher education departments and disciplines.
