Non-tenure track; 11-month appointment period; annually renewable depending on
performance and/or funding availability; the appointment as Director for Student Affairs is dependent upon the Dean’s approval and continuation is contingent upon satisfactory performance.
Description:


  • Lead and manage all JABSOM medical student service and support initiative and programs within the bounds of University of Hawaii, State and Federal laws, regulations and policies that govern a public tax-supported state institution.
  • Guide, manage, organize, coordinate, and assess medical student services including scholarship and financial aid counseling, advising, learning support and student well-being.
  • Facilitate long-term planning goals, determine annual objectives, and continually assess and improve student support programs and student services.
  • Teach medical students, to include use of applicable tools and methods of assessment, in topics related to managing one’s role as a medical student, elements of student success, decision-making about specialties, and other topics essential to successful completion of medical school and matching into a residency program.
  • Teach faculty members about medical student processes, advising, elements of student success, and other topics essential to our students’ successful completion of medical school and matching into a residency program.
  • Lead and manage OSA faculty and/or staff coordination with the Office of Medical Education to ensure that longitudinal efforts related to student well-being, mental health, resiliency, career and personal advising, professionalism and policies that influence the MD program curriculum are complementary and well-implemented.
  • Serve as the primary Office of Student Affairs liaison with the Office of (undergraduate) Medical Education and Office of Graduate Medical Education on current and future work related to the UME-to-GME transition, as laid forth in the Coalition for Physician Accountability’s Undergraduate Medical Education to Graduate Medical Education Review Committee (UGRC).
  • Assure use of cost-effective and sound financial procedures and compliance with state and federal codes and statutes.
  • Serve as liaison between the student body and the faculty/administration.
  • Serve on standing committees as a member, ex officio, or faculty advisor (e.g., Curriculum Committee, Pre-Clerkship Education Committee, Clerkship Education Committee, Evaluation, Review and Remediation Committee, Student Standing and Promotion Committee, Academic Appeals Committee, Liaison Committee on Medical Education Compliance Committee, Interclass Council, JABSOM Professionalism Advisory Committee).
  • Participate and take a leadership role when appropriate in the creation, dissemination, and implementation of institutional policies and procedures related to medical students.
  • Keep abreast with current national and international developments in student affairs.
  • Serve as the medical school’s representative to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Group on Student Affairs and to the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME).
  • Serve as the main point of contact for urgent student issues (e.g., absences, personal, academic and health emergencies, occupational exposure) and for the health system/hospital questions related to medical student rotations or support.
  • Participate in the teaching of medical students in a specialty area.
  • Supervise or mentor medical students in a specialty area.
  • Conduct research in areas of interest.
  • Perform other duties as related, required, and/or assigned by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
Minimum Qualifications for Associate Professor:
  • M.D./D.O., board certification by a specialty under the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or AOA.
  • Eligible for Hawaii medical license.
  • A minimum of four (4) years in the rank of Assistant Professor or four years of other medical experience, or a total of four (4) years of teaching in the rank of Assistant Professor and other medical experience or one (1) year at the rank of Associate Professor at another LCME or COCA-AOA accredited medical school.
  • Ability to serve as a role model for student and junior colleagues.
  • Evidence of effective teaching medical students and/or residents or fellows. This includes evidence of facilitating medical learner-centered learning and demonstration of a positive attitude to learner growth.
  • Evidence of research/scholarship in medical education, student/resident support services, or related areas.
  • Experience in counseling, advising, or mentoring medical students and/or residents.
  • Excellent interpersonal, team building, and communication skills.
  • Experience in supervising office staff.
  • Excellent judgment and record of effective management.
  • Proven ability in program administration.
Desirable Qualifications for Associate Professor:
  • Knowledge and understanding of the role of Student Affairs as an out-of-classroom educator and counselor.
  • Understanding of adult behavior, organizational development, group dynamics, team building, the art of change, and University governance and student lifestyle preferences.
  • Ability to create and sustain open communication and understanding with faculty and colleagues to coordinate student activities within and outside of the University policies and procedures.
  • Experience in administration of an office or unit with multiple responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications for Professor:
  • In addition to those of Associate Professor, minimum qualifications include:
    • A minimum of four (4) years in the rank of Associate Professor or ten years of other medical experience, or one (1) year at the rank of Professor at another LCME or COCA-AOA accredited medical school.
    • Proven ability in teaching, research and program administration.
Desirable Qualifications for Associate Professor:
  • Same as Associate Professor
