Associate Scientist I, Upstream Process Development
Position Summary:
Catalent is a growing Biotech Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) with an internationally recognized tradition of quality and service. Catalent Cell and Gene Therapy provides Process Development, process characterization, and GMP manufacturing services to industry leaders utilizing novel technologies to produce state-of-the-art vaccines and gene therapies. This is a full- time, salaried, position: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.
The Process Development department is responsible for providing leadership and support to the Catalent Cell and Gene Therapy sites. The Department has the responsibility for developing upstream and downstream manufacturing processes utilizing novel technologies to produce state-of-the-art therapies for people when they are most in need. As a Catalent Cell and Gene Therapy employee, you will actively contribute to the delivery of our services and products to our customers and their patients.
The Associate Scientist I, Process Development is actively engaged in upstream and midstream process and product development within a dynamic project team. As Associate Scientist I, this person understands and executes most fundamental and some specialized lab techniques focused on cell amplification and viral vector production. With this knowledge, prior to each study they consult with the supervisor and execute a series of experiments independently or with minimal supervision. After the experiment is complete, they assist in data analysis and report generation, actively participate in preparation of the protocol, reports, and SOPs. Candidate will participate in the development and implementation of upstream production processes for multiple projects entering the Catalent Cell and Gene Therapy pipeline. Knowledge/expertise should be practical and focused on lab-related activities.

The Role:
Implement knowledge/expertise to successfully execute specific aspects of a project:
  • Read, understand, and execute SOPs related to media preparation and cell banking activities.
  • Maintain multiple cell lines and supply working cell cultures for analytical/Process Development team.
  • Perform scale-up of suspension and adherent cell lines from shake flasks/T-flasks to Wave / Stir Tank Bioreactors and Cell Stacks/HyperStacks to Fixed Bed Bioreactors.
  • Prepare and manage inventory of buffers, reagents, and media.
  • Aids in design and execution of the experiments to develop and improve scalable AAV production processes utilizing different transfection systems with focus on mammalian and insect cell cultures.
  • Collects experimental data for reports and presentations.
  • Organize and manage data/documentation relating to cell culture activities.
  • Lab maintenance, stocking, cleaning, other duties as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Candidate:
  • B.S. Degree in Biology, Life Science or Chemical Engineering field with <1 year of relevant experience.
  • Prior experience with cell culture or bioreactor operations a plus.
  • The ability to work in team-oriented environment is essential, as this person will work closely with other members of Process Development Group, QC and Operations.
  • Previous experience working in Biotechnology or Pharmaceutical industry is a plus.
