Job Title: Associate Scientist I - Analytical Technologist
Overview
The Analytical Technologist supports the KaloCyte’s Research & Development team with running product purification processes, preparing and performing a variety of specialized and routine analytical tests and assays, calibrating, and maintaining instruments, data analysis and documentation, and other technical laboratory activities. This is a full-time, on-site, benefits-eligible position which requires flexibility to work a variable schedule, including up to 50% evenings; hours will vary from week to week. Sample work schedules include:
- 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM
- 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM
- 5:00 PM – 1:00 AM
Critical Skills & Key Performance Indicators
- Production: Perform all steps of hemoglobin (Hb) protein purification from donor blood bags through finished purified Hb, meeting in-process and final release specifications. Maintain Hb inventory sufficient for product fabrication and R&D studies. Perform product post-fabrication clean-up using appropriate filtration (TFF) or resin process. Identify and implement process and efficiency improvements.
- Assay performance: Perform ELISAs, RT-PCR, quantitative PCR and protein characterization (Western blots), endotoxin assays, biocompatibility testing (complement and cytokine ELISA and Luminex arrays), and other specialized blood assays. Prepare materials and equipment, and process and organize multiple samples simultaneously. Set up samples and equipment for above assays.
- R&D support: Assist with research studies, experiments and assays including experimental conduct, collection of data, preparation of solutions and equipment set-up. Troubleshoot issues with technical procedures; evaluate new types of experimental approaches analyses and recommend changes to protocols. Customize protocols to the biological systems utilized in the laboratory.
- Data management and reporting: Collect and enter research data into laboratory notebooks and databases. Prepare for analysis and interpretation. Report data and compile information into graphs and documents, keep logs and lab notebooks current, and maintain data files on research.
- Lab support: Prepare lab supplies and equipment for upcoming assays and research experiments. Prepare mixtures such as buffers and reagents following established formulas and procedures. Prepare samples for testing. Ensure that all specimens and equipment necessary for experiments are available and in good order. Assist with maintenance, cleaning, calibration, testing, troubleshooting and repair of the lab and equipment. Maintain a clean and organized workspace.
- Technical writing: Author, review, update, and maintain SOPS, protocols, and BPRs with current processes, and obtain necessary approvals/signatures.
- Communications: Participate in discussions of research protocols and objectives. Communicate results and conclusions to other scientists in a multi-disciplinary environment. Convey and discuss research results with team lab members and university collaborators.
Job Location / Working Conditions
Company headquarters and its laboratories are located within the University of Maryland Center for Blood Oxygen Transport and Hemostasis (CBOTH), Health Sciences Facility (HSRF) III building in Baltimore, Maryland, fully equipped to carry out ErythroMer™ fabrication, benchmarking, and IND-enabling research with potential exposure to blood, animals, biological, chemical, and radioactive hazards. Must be physically able to wear protective equipment.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or a relevant field of science preferred.
- 1-2 years of relevant work experience, preferably in a company laboratory setting.
- Ability to collaborate with Affiliate/University team and company’s Co-Founders.
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
Computer Skills
Strong proficiency with common laboratory and office productivity systems including GraphPad Prism, Adobe products, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Outlook), and video conferencing.

Pay: $55,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
